You need books that will capture their maturing minds. I love to look for books told through the eyes of teenagers so my own teens can more easily relate to the events and emotions. We also enjoy historical fiction, fantasy, and even the occasional non-fiction. These books to read with your teenager are some of our favorites over the years as well as books recommended to our family that I have added to our own reading lists.

While these books have been selected for teens from 12 to 18 years of age, the award-winning titles and the titles on YALSA's selected lists span a broad range of reading and maturity levels. We encourage adults to take an active role in helping individual teens choose those books that are the best fit for them and their families.

With so many excellent young adult books published each year, it can be difficult for teen readers to determine which ones are the best. Each January, the Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of the American Library Association, gives out several awards, including the Michael L. Printz Award for literary excellence in young adult literature. In addition, the Printz Committee names up to four Honor Books. Here are some of the winners and honorees since 2000, presented in chronological order from most recent to oldest. These rich stories and diverse characters will have teens -- and even their parents -- hooked from the first chapter. Listening to picture books over and over again helps children learn new words. Picture books can also help adults discuss important topics with younger children, like feelings or world events, by using stories.

Chapter books are a great way for kids to keep reading on their own. Chapter books start small (under 50 pages) and get bigger as reading improves. Chapter books help kids practice telling a story from start to finish, in a clear order.

Books in the teen section of the library have content that is best for middle and high school readers. Some books, aimed at older teens, may have violence, swearing, and sexual content. Topics are generally limited to what a middle or high school reader might experience.

Please note that these are not necessarily the ten best books your teens will read in their lifetime. Not all of these books will stand the test of time as Christian classics. But each of them is suited to twenty-first century teenaged readers and together they will provide a foundation for the Christian life that will prove both deep and wide. I list them in no particular order.

If you speak languages other than English at home but want to introduce your child to reading in English, you can look for dual-language books. When Gretchen isn't reading, she's blogging about books or coding WordPress websites for authors and bloggers.
