I am the standing champion of my The Bachelor / Bachelorette fantasy league. When colleagues learn this, they ask a number of questions, but today, I would like to answer the most important one: How do I start my own Bachelor / Bachelorette fantasy league? And why should I?
This season the folks at ABC caught wind of the underground fantasy sport, and produced their own perversion of The Bachelor / Bachelorette fantasy league rules. While it's cute the producers and marketers think a March Madness-esque bracket is enough to capture the complexity of their television show, we strongly recommend you avoid their unofficial "rules" and stick with what follows. We also encourage you to your own rules, as to preserve the grassroots spirit. Disney owns everything, but damned if they tell us how to run our Bachelor / Bachelorette fantasy league!
The goal of the game is for your team to accumulate the most points by the end of the season and be crowned the winner. Fantasy teams earn points when players they have drafted perform the acts listed below, including kissing, getting over long-held fears, and taking helicopter rides.
After the first episode, in which the contestants are introduced as they exit a limo in front of the Bachelor mansion, each team drafts three contestants. No two teams may share the same contestant at this point. Contestants are chosen in a snake draft format, so if three teams are competing the drafting order would go Team A, Team B, Team C, Team C, Team B, Team A, and so on, until all three teams have chosen three contestants.
Before each new episode, each team is allowed to deploy their once per season option to swap one contestant from their team for another from the pool of unselected contestants. When a team loses a contestant, they are also allowed to draft a replacement from the pool of unselected contestants.
Points may be earned for both good and bad behavior, complementing the two different methods of playing The Bachelor: being here to make friends, and not being here to make friends. Points may only be earned or lost once per location within the show per episode, though the definition of location is open for debate amongst individual leagues.
Each team is responsible for tracking their own score. The day after each episode, each team is encouraged to email the league with said scoring documentation. After the final episode, points are tallied and the team with the most points wins.
