Okay, maybe I'm a dumb, but I can't figure out what happens when
someone goes against a d4 Relationship or Value. It's tripled for this
conflict, but then how can it be stepped back?

Help me out here, what am I missing?

One step back from d4 is technically d0. That Drive is unusable for the remainder of the episode. You're going to need to re-write the Drive during your tag scene, and preferably spend that episode's Growth to bring it up to a d6.

So what would I be rolling if that challenged/stepped back Relationship is the reason for doing something? Might I be down to only 1 die in that contest?

In that case, you might want to find another Drive for doing what you're doing. If it's a Relationship, see if you have another Relationship that could come into play...or spend a Plot Point for a d6 for the scene.

If it's a Value that's been downsized to the "d0," you need to figure out other Values for your character that could help in your current situation. It's quite a challenge to your character to be down a Value. However, it does provide interesting RP opportunities.

Yeah, this produces those fantastic scenes where you cannot even
comprehend possessing that value or a viewpoint about it. Not the "I
hate love, I'm going to become a cold-blooded killer and go kill
everybody!" scene but the "I'm going to sit here and stare at this
flower and wonder if love is anything but a cruel joke..."

This is called a Shutdown Trait, and it's just not available to use.
It's a good thing you weren't depending on it much, right? :)

Well, but I don't recover it the same way I recover other Shutdown traits, is the thing that was tripping me up.  Thanks, I think I get it.  Jason
