How does art change when nature is allowed to intervene?
Washington Street Art Center in Somerville, MA, invites artists to submit works created in collaboration with nature, where nature and natural forces are not just materials or subjects, but active collaborators shaping the final outcome.
This call centers on art that embraces unpredictability, transformation, and co-authorship with the natural world. We are especially interested in works where nature introduces surprise—through growth, decay, erosion, weather, time, or other environmental processes—and where the artist intentionally relinquishes some degree of control.
We seek artworks that:
- Are transformed by natural elements such as wind, water, snow, sun, soil, fire, plants, microorganisms, animals, or geological processes.
- Allow chance, time, and environmental conditions to influence form, color, structure, or meaning.
- Explore creative collaboration with nature rather than nature as only muse or setting.
- Works may be temporary, evolving, or documented through photo, video, sound, or text.
Eligible Media
All disciplines are welcome, including but not limited to*:
- Sculpture and installation
- Photography and video documentation
- Sound, performance, and experimental practice
- Bio-art, eco-art, and process-based work
*Note: Washington Street Art Center is an artists' co-op studio space with a gallery that hosts exhibitions and events year round. The gallery is approximately 16'x20' . Artworks that can fit this space or are flexible in presentation will be considered.
