Don't Miss This Special Concert!
Come in from the snow banks and experience a haven of music, culture and community created by Balla Kouyaté, Mike Block and their band Djékady. One night only--this Sunday, March 1st, Djékady comes to Arts at the Armory for the release concert of their first album, Benkan.
Djékady — a Mandinka phrase meaning “coming together is good” — is a fiery six-piece band led by Grammy winners Balla Kouyaté (balafon, vocals) and Mike Block (cello, vocals). The group brings Malian music into conversation with American folk and contemporary styles.
They’re joined by Mamoudou Konate (djembe), Idrissa Koné (talking drum, calabash, percussion, vocals), Luke Okerlund (guitar), and Mike Rivard (bass, sintir).
And honestly — who doesn’t love the talking drum? Add djembe into the mix to get you up out of your seat and there's no telling what might happen.
Our neighbors Balla and Mike have toured the world. Now they’re playing their debut album concert at home.
With support from a NEFA NEST grant, they will be furthering their local impact through workshops with Somerville High School orchestra students today!
Let's come together!
p.s. Only *3* tickets remain for Rufus Wainwright--catch one while you can!
