The performers on the
October 15th Songwriters in the Round are traveling from far and near to bring you their voices.
Janet Feld is someone you’d want to hear serenade you around a campfire. She is a veteran of bringing beauty into the spaces of everyday life. From Rhode Island comes the strong voice and the mystical power of
Meera Raphael. Up from New York City is a traveling bard who literally lives for this kind of thing.
Rupert Wates is his name, and if you heard him back in June you will definitely be telling all your friends not to miss this appearance. Hosting all these hijinks is someone from closer to home: M
ark Stepakoff. His voice will echo through your mind for days afterwards because his unique perspective is so winning.
We are
fortunate to have a sponsorship for this event thanks to an anonymous donor.
Sponsorships keep us humming because they provide the four songwriters and sound engineer a base fee of $40 each, regardless of how much we earn in tips. It may not sound like much, but that bit of appreciation can be the difference between a performer coming to share joy with our community, or deciding to stay home and watch Netflix. Want to join the ranks of sponsor?
Please get in touch if you can help.

The Armory Café is a warm, welcoming place where people can enjoy food and drink as well as chance meetings and conversation. But everyone becomes quiet when four songwriters take the stage to take turns playing songs, occasionally joining each other on harmony vocals or guitar licks. In between songs, the audience listens while the performers discuss music and life in general. “I was inspired by the ‘guitar pulls’ of the Bluebird Café in Nashville,” host David Thorne Scott says, “but with a wider variety. There is folk and country, but also rock, R&B, soul, jazz, and musical theater.”
Held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 7:00-8:30 p.m. This program is supported with a small grant from the Somerville Arts Council, a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The event is free but you may want to donate $10-$20 for the performers.
Part of the ROOTED Armory Café Series. Food, snacks, coffee, tea, beer and wine available!
You might hear a young up-and-coming pro, an established mid-career performer and mentor, and a cherished elder of the scene -- all sharing music. The growing relationships will warm your heart and enrich your soul. Come every week as the lineup shifts and new friends are made.
All ages welcome.

Rupert Wates combines unforgettable songs with virtuoso guitar playing. His music is the fruit of twenty years at the top of his profession. Folk tinged, with flavors of jazz and even classical, it bears the impression of his English roots as well as his years in New York City and on the road in America. By turns witty, erudite and moving, his songs will go straight to your heart. Performing an average of 120 shows annually across the U.S., Canada, and Europe, Wates prefers intimate listening rooms where the focus is on connection and storytelling. He was voted Artist of the Year in both 2013 and 2016 by Concerts In Your Home and was their most-booked performer for five consecutive years. In 2018, he was a finalist in the Kerrville New Folk Song Contest and named an Emerging Artist at the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival.

Meera Raphael is a spitfire folk-rock singer-songwriter from Rhode Island invoking the Divine Feminine with a voice many describe as ethereal and angelic, yet also epic and intense. Her poetry is introspective and inspiring, combining multicultural mystic traditions and contemporary theories of psychology and sociology in a quest to grapple with the complexities of the human condition. Her mission is to be the voice of Mystic Revolt, to spur both an awakening of both spiritual and social consciousness in her listeners, and make music that is a catalyst for positive change, for Love Peace and Justice for All
