Welcome to May! It’s the time of putting winter coats away, magnolia and cherry blossoms, and college graduations. Our Songwriters in the Round this week is special for a few reasons. This show will feature young performers from around the country: Seattle, Washington; Springfield, Missouri; and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. They have a few things in common: vocal power, intriguing lyrics, and magical melodies. And they are all current students at Berklee College of Music. It’s finals week but Wyatt Silva, Emma Breelyn, and Aidan Campbell are coming to sing for you anyway. They are soon to move on, so catch them in this intimate setting while you still can!
This week we are trying out a different location: the Auditorium at the Somerville Central Library at 79 Highland Avenue. This will be a lovely room for our performers and audience. There will be trained, professional librarians on hand to shush anyone who tries to disturb the focused tranquility of our musical fellowship, so we anticipate no distractions.
Our sponsor for this show is SheBoom. SheBoom is a Somerville/Cambridge post-menopausal Brazilian-inspired percussion and vocal ensemble. Some see them perform at Porchfest this Saturday, May 9th, 4:30 p.m. at 41 Munroe Street, near the Prospect Hill Tower. https://www.facebook.com/SheBoomDrummers/
Songwriters in the Round
Wednesday May 6, 7pm-8:30pm
Auditorium, Central Library
79 Highland Avenue
Somerville, MA
free (NOTE: we are not allowed to solicit donations at this venue)
Songwriters in the Round is a warm, welcoming event where people can enjoy food and drink as well as chance meetings and conversation. But everyone becomes quiet when four songwriters take the stage to take turns playing songs, occasionally joining each other on harmony vocals or guitar licks. In between songs, the audience listens while the performers discuss music and life in general. “I was inspired by the ‘guitar pulls’ of the Bluebird Café in Nashville,” host David Thorne Scott says, “but with a wider variety. There is folk and country, but also rock, R&B, soul, jazz, and musical theater.”
Held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 7:00-8:30 p.m.
We occasionally visit other venues — don’t miss out! Sign up for the email list at http://eepurl.com/c2gNWf for the latest communication.
You might hear a young up-and-coming pro, an established mid-career performer and mentor, and a cherished elder of the scene -- all sharing music. The growing relationships will warm your heart and enrich your soul. Come every week as the lineup shifts and new friends are made.
All ages welcome.
Our songwriters this week
Aidan Campbell is an artist located in Brighton, MA. Coming from a background in musical theater, they worked in Portsmouth, NH as a performer and educator throughout their teenage years. Having picked up piano and guitar at an early age, they describe themselves as a ‘general lover of harmony’. Marrying this love of harmony with a deep passion for lyricism and storytelling has resulted in a catalogue of songs that is as heartfelt as it is eclectic. Follow them on instagram @aidancampbell17 for updates and catch them this summer with their band Lavandar Marriage*! (*Co-led with Emma Breelynn)
Wyatt Silva is a 19 year old multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter based in Seattle and Boston. He currently has two albums released which he plays all of the instruments on, and he recorded in his basement. He also has an EP, “Summer Songs”, tracked with a live band and recorded on tape. Wyatt is inspired by artists like Jeff Buckley, Elliott Smith and Tori Amos. wyattsilva.com
Emma Breelynn is an indie alternative folk artist from Springfield, Missouri. She is soon to graduate from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Professional Music, and a concentration in Songwriting. Her recently recorded debut EP, "Let Me Let You Go," will be released sometime this early summer. It features four emotionally driven and rock-influenced original songs, 'i'm not kind,' 'love in hatred,' i don't need you,' and 'let me let you go.' She’s also in the band “Lavandar Marriage” with fellow performer, Aidan Campbell. Follow Emma Breelynn on socials for updates! https://www.instagram.com/emmabreelynn
Your host, David Thorne Scott, is a singer and songwriter in jazz and Americana styles. A longtime resident of Somerville, he organized Songwriters in the Round to foster a creative, dynamic music scene here. He believes that music can bring a community together like nothing else. “At a time of great conflict in our country – when words often fail us – music has the power to bridge divides... David Thorne Scott explores the intersection of Jazz and Americana, city and country, instrumentation and lyrics to create lush compositions and covers that are unifying, and healing, in their beauty.” - Laurie Fanell, Eponymous Review www.davidthornescott.com
