Hello Everyone:

We need nine volunteers for the MLK Day event.  At this time, I believe I know of about three people planning to come.  If you are planning to volunteer, I’d love to know as soon as possible so I can assign you to a section (lobby, auditorium, back stage).  All duties will be clear.

Let me know if I’ve missed your name below (sorry for the omission).  Thanks for volunteering:

·        Marlena

·        Courtney

2013 Annual MLK Jr Day Celebration in Somerville

Please join us on January 21 from 11am to 1pm at the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square for the annual MLK Jr Day Celebration event.  This year’s theme is “Equality through Access”.  The keynote speaker is Lorraine Cordeiro, Assistant Professor and Family Research Scholar at UMass/Amherst.  Soloist afroD will perform spoken word, jazz, and trumpet along with performances by El Sistema Youth Orchestra, the Somerville High School’s Dance Group, and Elizabeth Peabody House After School REACH.  Enjoy Clennon King of the Elizabeth Peabody House reading an MLK Jr speech and Marcus Santos of Grooversity as Master of Ceremonies and a performer.  Refreshments are provided by the Cambridge Portuguese Credit Union and Somerville Public Schools.  This year’s MLK Jr Award for an organization will be presented to the Walnut Street Center and the MLK Jr Award for an individual will be presented to Ellen Reisner.  The 2013 MLK Jr Day Essay Award winners are Kelly Cachimuel, Anmol Maini, Nathaniel Simon, and Owen Hughes

The 2013 MLK Jr Day Service Activities for January 21st are a blood drive on Holland Avenue in Davis Square outside the Somerville Theatre by the Red Cross from 11am to 4pm and also a non-perishable food and can drive at the Somerville Theatre from 11am to 2pm.  Donations to the Food Pantry can be any item that will not spoil or need refrigeration including food such as beans, rice, cans, crackers, cereal, peanut butter, pasta sauce, or noodles.

For more information about any of the above activities or the event, please contact 311 or call the Office of Somerville Commissions at 617-625-6600 (x2406).
