Bring an umbrella as we have a short walk to Union Square planned from 6-6:30pm. Speakers begin at 6:45-7:30pm.

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and the Somerville Commission for Women invite the community to join the Annual Candlelight Vigil in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Wednesday, October 3rd at 6:00 p.m. at the Somerville Public Safety Building, 220 Washington Street. The vigil will include a presentation of the new “Somerville Against Violence” banner by Shamrock Sign & Lettering Co. owner Tisha Sullivan.
The vigil walk begins at 6:00 p.m. through Union Square, concluding with a speaking agenda at the Public Safety Building from 6:30 p.m. Speakers include Mayor Curtatone, Chairperson of the Commission for Women, Nancy Bacci, Somerville Chief of Police Thomas Pasquarello, and a keynote address by Jason Lydon of The Network/La Red.
The vigil is an annual event bringing the community together to remember those who have lost their lives over the last year to domestic violence. Candles
We will have a vigil walk with candles through Union Square from 6-6:30pm. There will be a supply of electric and wax candles for participants. Interested vigil walkers can also download the “virtual candle” app for your Iphone (iHandy is the app developer)
Walk & Traffic Notice
The candlelight vigil walk will leave 220 Washington Street at 6pm and walk to the intersection of Prospect Street and Washington (blocking that intersection briefly with police escort), walk along the sidewalk along the square to the intersection of Bow and Union Square (again blocking the intersection), then walk back towards the square (blocking Washington and Webster Ave intersection). We’ll be on the sidewalk until the intersection of Prospect Street and Washington (blocking that intersection briefly with police escort) then returning to 220 Washington Street at 6:30pm.
Speakers will be in the Police Academy at 220 Washington Street from about 6:45pm until 7:30pm.
The event ends at 7:30pm and no further blocking of the intersections will occur after 6:30pm.
