Greeting from Someday Gardens!

Sorry we missed a week on the updates, but the past two weeks have
been hectic! Much of the time at the farm this past week was spent
assessing and addressing storm damage -like literally searching for
plants amidst the weeds -many of which had crested 2' in the 2-3 weeks
we were unable to enter the fields. While we did not experience the
flooding that so many in the county did, 16" of rain in 10 days will
wreak havoc on open ground -especially if had been freshly tilled.

The carrots, beets, and other May seeded crops are a complete loss,
and we also lost the last round of salad greens. These plots will be
tilled under and replanted over the next 2 weeks. The largest
casualty was that we have completely scratched all early summer
plantings at our southern farm plot near Johnson Creek. This was to
be our main planting area as it was only 3-4 miles away, but with the
Rock River Bridge out, the trip had become over 25 miles one way,
which was too much to keep up with and the beds have been given back
to the farmer or planted to cover crops. It was a hard decision, but
a necessary one.

Onto better things! Our (now streamlined) operations at the Watertown
farm are progressing well. The Hoop House tomatoes are approaching 5'
tall and have fruit, as do all of the pepper plants. We also were
able to plant all of our cucumbers, most of our tomatoes, and about 50
more peppers. All are thriving in the rich, moist soils!

Best of all are the potatoes. The plots continue to grow with a vigor
I have never seen in potato plants -many of the Carola plants are over
waist high and going strong! Virtually no loss is evident from the
late frost and their compost bed plantings have allowed them to
weather the storms with aplomb. Harvest seems to be right on schedule
-late July/Early August!

While the diversity of our offerings are diminished, and we have lost
almost an entire month of harvest, the rest of the summer looks very
bright indeed. We have hundreds of lettuce transplants ready to go in
again this week, and the summer crops are thriving. Thanks for your
patience!

Stay tuned as we regroup and head into the heavy harvests of July and
August!

Sincerely,

Rob and Meriah
