Dear Colleagues,
I am share the Flood contingency plan for the upcoming Kiremt Rainy season, which is based on the latest prediction from the Ethiopian Meteorological Institute (EMI). According to EMI, there will be above normal rainfall during this period, particularly over the central and eastern half of Tigray, Afar, East Amhara, northern Somali, Dire Dawa, Harari, and parts of eastern Oromia. Additionally, normal to above normal rainfall is expected in the western half of the country.
Given these predictions, it is crucial that we are well-prepared to mitigate any potential flood risks. The contingency plan outlines the necessary measures and actions to be taken in response to possible flood situations, including early warning systems, evacuation procedures, and preparedness and Response.

Dear All,
This is to share the Ethiopian Multi-Hazard Contingency Plan (Flood and Flood-Related Hazards) for the 2024 ‘Kiremt’ season. This plan outlines the preparedness, response, and recovery strategies for flood events in Ethiopia, aimed at mitigating the impact of floods and ensuring timely and effective assistance to affected communities. It outlines the roles and responsibilities of various stakeholders, including government agencies, NGOs, UN agencies, and other partners.
To give you the overview of the Key features of the plan include:
- Early Warning information: Indicate flood threat areas and provide timely warnings to affected communities. Alert message included in this plan.
- Preparedness and Response: Pre-positioning of emergency supplies, equipment, and personnel to ensure rapid response during floods.
- Evacuation and Shelter Management: Arrangements for safe evacuation of affected persons to temporary shelters.
We encourage all stakeholders to familiarize themselves with the plan and their respective roles in responding to flood events.
