Happy World Toilet Day 2024!

In view of the World Toilet Day (WTD) 2024 celebration, the Global WASH Cluster (GWC) invites its members, National Coordination Platforms (NCPs), and other partners to join the global campaign for "Sanitation for Peace," this year's event theme.

On a planet where 3.5 billion people live without safe toilets (WHO-UNICEF JMP, 2023), the GWC believes in the potential of WTD as an opportunity to highlight that sanitation is a human right that protects everyone’s dignity and safety. In emergencies, broken, inadequate, or damaged toilet systems spread deadly diseases which may eventually lead to outbreaks. Hence, the call for more investment and better governance of sanitation couldn’t be any stronger.

Everyone’s access to safe sanitation enables us to achieve a fairer, more peaceful world. This year, the GWC stresses on the three key messages that everyone should know:

  • Toilets are a place for peace. This essential space, at the centre of our lives, should be safe and secure. But for billions of people, sanitation is under threat from conflict, climate change, disasters and neglect. (In the next section, we feature the work of the GWC Climate Change Working Group on climate and sanitation)
  • Toilets are a place for protection. By creating a barrier between us and our waste, sanitation services are essential for public and environmental health. But when toilet systems are inadequate, damaged or broken, pollution spreads and deadly diseases get unleashed.
  • Toilets are a place for progress. Sanitation is a human right. It protects everyone’s dignity, and especially transforms the lives of women and girls. More investment and better governance of sanitation are critical for a fairer, more peaceful world

To take part in the global celebration, we invite you to join the following activities or circulate them in your networks, click each button to learn more and participate:

As climate change is one of the critical elements that affect sanitation systems in many parts of the world, including the basic access to safe and functional toilets, the GWC Climate Change Working Group is sharing this webinar on climate-resilient sanitation, organized in partnership with SANIHUB and the German WASH Network.

As part of the WTD celebration, we are pleased to feature the work of the WASH Sector Nigeria in bolstering the campaign for toilets as a space for peace, progress, and protection. WASH Sector Nigeria sets a great example to actively engaging with local partners through colorful visuals, as well as other practical collaterals like t-shirts and caps.

Efforts like this loudly echo the campaign for sanitation for peace especially at the national and sub-national levels.

We look forward to your active participation in the celebration and count on your continued support to the advocacy for sanitation for peace. If you have any questions or concerns, kindly reach out to us at:

On this day, world humanitarians celebrate World Toilet Day 2024, under the theme "Sanitation for Peace." Campaigns center on "Toilets – A Place for Peace," as well as a place for progress and protection, which will highlight how broken or inadequate sanitation systems can affect people’s lives, and will show how sustainable and inclusive sanitation is essential to a healthy, safe, and stable society.
