Hello again makers!

We just wanted to give you an update on all the things that are going on at the space at the moment.

Firstly Ed Chaney is stepping down as a trustee. Ed has given a great deal to SoMakeIt and has worked extremely hard to support the space and keep it running in the time he has been a trustee. We are all very sad to see him go. He will still be around the space, helping out and supporting new projects but unfortunately work commitments mean he is not able to continue his trustee responsibilities. Thankyou Ed for everything you have done.


Our biggest priority for current members right now is to make the space inviting and clearing out lots of junk that has been sat on shelves for far too long. Our first Hack the Space day will focus on making sure that the clean room is clean and sorting out the members storage area. It would be great if you could come along and help us organise and clean on Saturday 25th September.


SoMakeIt has a members storage policy that means that anything that is not in your members box needs to be labelled and dated for when it will be removed. Please can you prioritise sorting through your members box and and remove any items on the shelves that are yours. Any items left unlabeled by the first Hack the Space day on Saturday 25th September will be removed unless they are labelled. If you are unable to attend the space before this date for any reason, please let us know and we will make sure your items are kept until a later date.


Our current priority in the workshop is fitting dust extraction and air filtering for all fixed tooling as well as upgrading our power tools so that they have dust extraction ports. This should do a great deal to contribute towards keeping the space clean and helping to keep us all safe. We are currently in the process of working out how best to do this and pricing up materials. We will keep you posted on its progress!


We are also assembling a working party to begin to paint the floor. Chris Carter has kindly donated some floor paint and we are looking to get to this job as soon as possible. Please contact trustees if you are interested in volunteering, the more of us there are, the easier it will be to cause minimum disruption to the space.


We are also condemning the green sofa. It has become incredibly dirty and dusty over the years it has been with us and can no longer be hygienically maintained. We are looking at replacing this with cleanable chairs instead so that we can maintain hygiene levels more easily within the space. Please share through any of our communication channels if you would be able to help with removal or want to raise concerns about this decision.


We are also looking at the way we can all socialise and share in the space. For this reason we are considering removal of the large storage box in front of the sofa and chairs. We would like to replace this with a table so that it is easier to keep clean and can be used more comfortably as a meeting area. Please share through any of our communication channels your thoughts on this matter.


The space is also undergoing major electrical upgrades on 26th, 27th and 28th August. This means that Thursday 26th open evening and 27th Shed Group will be cancelled as it is likely there will be no electricity.

We would like to remind members of our light and noise policy now the space is reopened. Please can we ensure that the new roller blinds fitted in both rooms are rolled down at 10pm or before and that no industrial work is undertaken past 10pm. We have received complaints about both of these elements and do not want to have to close the space between particular hours.


As members of SoMakeIt we encourage a do-ocracy attitude. In line with this, our new members area (more information to follow) will allow us to form teams, with each team taking responsibility for a specific area of maintenance, induction or projects within that area. Members will be able to join multiple teams and be able to contribute as much or as little as they want to these areas. We are asking all members to begin to consider which areas they would be interested in supporting and organising, ready for when our new members area goes live.


Finally, we are in the final stages of implementing our new website and members area. Unfortunately, as this is not yet fully operational, access to the space is limited as electronic entry is also not operational. We apologise for this inconvenience and are working as hard as we can to implement the new members area so that keyholders can have full access to the space again.
