When I was in the Solomon Islands I met with a number of people who wanted to build provincial knowledge centres. These proposals were mostly focussed in 'Are'are. They included an add on to a school in Tariuna, a house for musical instruments in Su'u, and an Internet enabled research centre at Puritoro.

Simple buildings are key for affordability and I would like to highlight the Sustainable Habitat Challenge (SHAC),  which has more recently become a 10m2 house competition.

I have made an inquiry with the SHAC to see if there has been any discussion on how some what has been learned through the SHAC research could be exported, perhaps to creative applications in Solomon Islands and Pacific communities, promoting something of a "RADIO-SHAC" for wireless networking in the developing world. Some of the ideas behind these buildings could be very well suited for small provincial knowledge centres.

Kia ora,

Sean
