Hello Supporters and Advocates for Our Local Economy -
First I want to
welcome 31 new people who signed up at our Think Columbus First booth at Comfest to receive email updates on the local economy movement. Thank you for joining us!
Think Columbus First <
thinkcolumbusfirst.org> and the $2 bill campaign was our initial effort to start a buzz and get people excited about the benefits of buying local.
We distributed hundreds of handouts listing the "Ten Reasons to Buy Local" and we swapped hundreds of $2 bills (and gave everyone a nickel to represent an instant 2.5% return on investment when they spend local). To see what our $2 bills looked like - with our website address and the "Spend Me Local" rubber stamp - be sure to
visit our new website. Thanks to Mayda Sanchez for creating our page - more info will be added as our campaign progresses.
At our Steering Committee meeting last week we decided to
continue branding our campaign with the $2 bill theme. We plan to create posters and business cards and perhaps other print materials with an image of our specially marked $2 bills along with a list of reasons to buy local. In addition, we hope that independent, locally owned businesses will display the poster and print materials and order some of our
$2 bills to give as change to their customers. We want to keep the conversation going in this face-to-face way... so, if you happen to get one of our $2 bills, take a second look to see if it has our website and the "Spend Me Local" message. And of course, spend it local, maybe as a tip at local restaurant? - and tell 'em why.
Our new Facebook page is located here:

just search on Think Columbus First. Please check it out and "Like" it. If you see posts that are very
useful it would help us spread the word if you "share" on your own FB
page. Like the
multiplier effect every time we spend locally,
every FB
"share" multiplies our message many times over through our friends. Thanks to Todd Mills for setting up our FB presence.
To be clear to our newcomers on the list, Think Columbus First is the first campaign launched by
SOLE (Support Our Local Economy), a coalition of organizations and local business owners. Sorry for acronyms, but SOLE is now an official local economy network of
BALLE, the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies.
BALLE is the mother lode of information on building strong local economies and communities! I encourage you to visit their website and click on the photos and videos posted recently after their annual conference. Several of us were able to attend and we are back even more excited about what we can accomplish. You can listen to the keynote by
Naomi Klein, author of the bestseller The Shock Doctrine, as well as highlights from other sessions.
We are just getting started and we always appreciate your input and suggestions. Volunteer opportunities will be forthcoming as plans unfold. Please feel free to post your ideas, comments, suggestions, etc. on this list. Our Google Group email address is
sol...@googlegroups.com and the website address is
http://groups.google.com/group/solenow - our archives can be found there.
