The fourth lecture in the series.
--------------------------------------------

Speaker: Mr. Shaji John, Chief - Solar Initiatives, L & T

Topic: Solar Power – Present & Future Growth

Date: 2 Sept 2011, Friday
Venue: ESB 106
Time: 3.15 - 4.15pm

Abstract

India is undergoing an energy crisis. 53% of the country’s current
power needs come from coal. This highly polluting source of energy is
bound to run out someday. Compared to the West, India’s energy
consumption is growing at break-neck speed. As India’s poor millions
advance out of poverty, they are consuming more and more power,
outstripping national power production. The negative gap between
consumption and production has been increasing exponentially in the
past two decades, forcing the government to buy increasing quantities
of power source from abroad. This trend is set to continue, with the
country doubling it’s energy consumption in the next 20 years. Finding
alternatives to fossil fuel-based energy sources is vital to India’s
future if it wants to continue sustained growth. Solar energy is
considered to be important in India’s development of renewable energy
(RE) as alternative energy source to sustain the growth of economy. My
talk will be around the following topics:
1.)  Imperatives to adopt Solar Energy
2.)  Solar Technologies
3.)  Drivers for Growth of Solar Technology and Market
4.)  Solar Market Segments
5.)  Growth in Global Solar Market
6.)  Development of Solar Market in India
7.)  Projects under implementation in India
