Below is a note from a fellow suggesting that making use of the surplus summer heat will be a big factor in India. I think that many many folks are tuning into this as a critical factor and there will be solutions forthcoming. This will pave the way for more and larger solar thermal systems. I think the safest route to take is being the outfit that integrates components and provides the systems and ongoing monitoring and service. The second best opportunity I see is the high risk alternative of trying to develop less expensive collectors so customers can afford to cover a larger area. Adoption of the larger area approach is dependent on their being a good use of the surplus summer heat..

Sometime back, there was a discussion on the forum
about Absorbtion chillers. It was about using hot water in summers for chilling
needs.
Now, please see and suggest on the following
situation:
We, in India, have many houses (Even as small as
150 sq. yards) that have installed the solar hot water systems. Since we do not
have freezing weather, these are simplest form of Solar hot water systems. But,
these are only used for about 3 months in a year as the summers are long and
very hot. This becomes a problem as the payback period increases to 4-5 years,
which otherwise would have been maybe just a year or so.
Now, after reading the article on absorbtion
chillers, I got the idea of making use of the heat of this hot water for other
purposes so that the installation of such systems become more viable and more
and more people install them. I tried getting information, but it seems that
these chillers are mainly for chilling water and are therefore meant for large
commercial installations only.
Can anyone of you suggest more uses of this hot
water to increase feasability, or any company selling any equipment or something
that is compact in size to be accomodated on a rooftop along with solar
absorbers that can use the heat and convert it to anything useful like
electricity or Aur conditioning etc. I was also trying to find a small sized
stirling engine of maybe 1-3 KW, but was unable to find anything.
Any help is welcome. I am sure, such a device can
be a big success here.

If need a lot of summer time air conditioning than this a very good use of the "surplus summer heat energy" from any solar thermal system that is sized to provide for more than just Summer DHW. Currently the absorption chillers are mostly sized for buildings larger than a residence, but they are moving towards residential. The Santa Clara University team for this years Solar Decathlon is using a solar powered chiller from Solarsa.
A quick Google shows wide interest.
