Hi Steve,

It's all about the design.  From what I have seen from the burnt ones, the design of the LED seem to be set at the maximum voltage ratings. I thing I can do a voltage test threshold for one LED bulb. Seems like the LED bulbs would work at low voltage.

Durability. That's a nice question. It depends on the stability of power where you are. I haven't had any issue at my place. We have some which have burnt and we are retaining the the housing. Since getting the bulb housing is a challenge locally, we are redesigning the LED boards inside the bulb and reusing the housing. this way we are able to build custom bulbs from burn ones. The 9w bulb gets a bit hot and am still testing the bulb. I have been able to run the bulb continuously for 40:40hr and power consumption is 0.28 kWh. There are other wattage LED bulbs available at a lower price.

Thanks a bunch for this info. I have been looking to buy energy saver bulbs like the one you tested. Unfortunately, almost all the bulbs I bought (5W-20W) branded Phillips, etc seem not to last.

The price tag on the one you tested will definitely raise the question of durability. I wish to have 7 pieces. Have the bulbs been tested to last long (at least a year)?

I led Bulb has been on for the last 24h+ and the power consumption is as follows.

 time: 28:30hrs

 kWh: 0.19

You can buy this from Luthuli at about Shs 400.
