slow ide perf. unsupported controller?

My 486 class system that I use as a bridge has been working happily
under OpenBSD for a few days now. So far all has been good except
my disk transfers. It seems that disk reads are very slow.

I looked through the kernel messages and found the following lines:

pciide0: channel 1 ignored (not responding; disabled or no drives?)

Am I right to assume that this means that DMA transfers with the on board
EIDE controller are not supported? Is it time to go scsi or add a supported
IDE controller if I want to improve disk reads?
