I just purchased a Sony Viao PCG-Z505HS. It's the new Sony Viao Z505
laptop, out perhaps a week ago. PIII500, 128mb,12 gig hd and very
sweet. Of course, I wipped the dreaded W98 os off of it in favor of
installing OpenBSD. Happily, everything installed just fine off the
CD-Rom drive (I had check this out weeks ago before ordering), and I
even just got X working now.
The problem: I cannot boot unless I use my 2.6 install cd. It stops
on a message "booting partition 3 disk 0"; of course I saw the FAQ info
on this, how to boot and use fdisk and installboot to re-install the
MBR, but to no avail. I even tried to edit the drive geometry (in the
bios and with fdisk), tried to pass the cyl, heads, sectors to fdisk and
to installboot, but to no avail again. I'm pretty bummed at this
moment.
Can someone help me out here? I'm trying *real* hard not to go to
Linux-land, as I'd love to put Open on this thing but I'm stuck and
confused. I can't believe there isn't a way to do it all w/o using an
alternate boot loader as the FAQ suggests. If someone could help me out
that would be great! Oh, we (my co-worker and I) just donated a slew of
Sparcs to the OpenBSD sparc cause if this gets me brownie points or
faster help) ;)
thanks,
Greg Gallagher
