Hi folks...

I'm setting up a new machine for someone, and the machine has a
Diamond Multimedia AGP graphics card which the NetBSD kernel reports
has an S3 Savage 4 graphics chip.

According to XF86, this would be a Diamond Multimedia Stealth 2000 3D
(or something like that :-)

Unfortunately, I can't get XF86 to work on the thing, even in a basic
mode like 1024x768x8bpp. The X server starts, puts the monitor into
a totally whacked mode, and then the machine is effectively wedged,
as far as I can tell.

Can anyone help me out w/ an XF86 config file for this card?

Thanks in advance...

Savage chipset seems to need special code for it. current supports are:
- XF86 3.3.6 has linux-only support in it,
- XF86 4.0 has similar one, and
- XAccel 5 (commercial one) has beta plugin driver
I have tested the last option with Savage IX8 (Thinkpad T20), on
top of FreeBSD emulation, it works fine modulo screen crash on
suspend/resume.

Unfortunately, it seems that the current implementation of XFee86 3.3.6 in NetBSD does not allow
you to run X on an Savage4 based video card due to ...I wonder why :)

I should say more.I had the same problems with a S3 Savage4 based card.Simply, it doesn't supported
for now.It works only under linux b'cuz it is supported by linux XF86_SVGA* server - in the XF86_SVGA from NetBSD (3.3.6) there is no such a chip.

Also :), probably the XF86_SVGA server will detect your Savage4 chip as GENERIC SVGA chipset
and run X respectiveiy 320x200 as defined for that one.Is it OK for you ?(I mean resolution)
