Hello,

I was greatly surprized by the fact that atapi-cd doesn't recognize VCD
disks. I didn't find any solution to that but the patch from
http://people.freebsd.org/~luoqi/ , and am wondering what were
the reasons that it was not included into the kernel?

I do not want the question to sound like a "why not", not even because
the code change is safe and minimal, but because there is no other way
to read a VCD without patching and recompiling kernel.

What I have on my 4.7-STABLE:
$ dd if=/dev/[r]acd0[c,a] of=/dev/null bs=[2048,2352,whatever]
dd: /dev/acd0c: Invalid argument

It is not even a question about mounting the device, which although
works via -t cd9660 -s 0 but leaves the files inaccessible; it is
about inability to read a perfectly valid medium.

Any comments?

Huh, I've been able to grab/watch VCDs since, uhm, 4.2 or so... In a
C program you can do:

int bs = 2352;
ioctl(fd, CDRIOCSETBLOCKSIZE, &bs);

and after that just use plain reads.

it is probably more appropriate here ]

Hi all,

I am having some trouble with GDM and I was wondering if anyone can
either confirm the problem or shed some light on it.

I track the STABLE tree (release=cvs tag=RELENG_4) and ports tree
(release=cvs tag=.) with cvsup. I held off a little while to upgrade my
system to XFree86 4.3.0, but did the build last night.

I brought everything up to date with cvsup, rebuilt world and kernel,
installed, rebooted, and then used portupgrade (portupgrade -rR XFree86)
to rebuild X. I also used portupgrade -rR to bring some gnome2
libraries uptodate. All of the builds were successful.

uname -a says I am running 4.8-RC
pkg_version has '=' for everything.

Users and root can do a startx to start gnome2 sessions. Everything
works fine.

If I enable gdm, then root can login, but users can't. I get an error
message saying that the session lasted less than 10-seconds, and to
check .xsession-errors. They can't login with the failsafe modes,
either.

.xsession-errors is empty
/var/log/messages has a error: gdm[XXX]: run_session_child: Could not
open ~/.xsession-errors

I then created a new user, and was able to login with gdm, but I got
root's session (shells started in /root, Nautilus brought up /root,
etc).

I renamed ~/.gnome2/gdm for an old user and the same thing happened.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on here? Is this a bug?

link the relevant library(ies)? Is this even possible?

Yeah. Have you asked Louqi Chen <lu...@freebsd.org> why he hasn't
committed this? That would seem the obvious first step...

Hi gang,

I have this SB AWE32 which works great under newpcm, but the midi
(/dev/sequencer) is nonexistant. I used to work fine with the VOXWARE
drivers, but I understand (well, config(1) told me) that they are
deprecated. The LINT-file told me about newmidi, which isn't in the tree
yet, so...:

Where can I get the newmidi drivers? Luigi's website is kinda downish,
and I can't seem to find mirrors of his stuff anywhere (but maybe I
didn't look hard enough) so I can't even see if these are available
there. It would be nice if I could use the awe wavetable midi with newpcm.

How stable is newmidi? Is it good enough to put in the RELENG_4 tree?

Anyone?

Try this:

find $DIR -type f \
|xargs readelf -a 2>/dev/null \
|awk '/^File:/ { name = $2; printed = 0; } \
/XDR|xdr/ { if (!printed) { print name; printed = 1; } }' \
|xargs ldd 2>/dev/null

If it reports any pathnames without listing shared libraries, then those
are statically linked.

I did the same thing for SA-03:02.openssl, but used "/SSL|TLS/" where
"/XDR|xdr" is. Both (either?) values are from public header files.

Hmm.. I use mplayer to read VCDs and it works fine..

Hi,

I have tried to use mplayer to read VCDs but it fails.

The error message is:

Playing /dev/cd0c
track 01: adr=1 ctrl=6 format=2 00:02:00

track 03: adr=1 ctrl=4 format=2 01:29:16
track 04: adr=1 ctrl=4 format=2 15:38:04

Error in CDRIOCSETBLOCKSIZE: Inappropriate ioctl for device
ioctl dif1: Invalid argument

My kernel is 4.8-RC. Any idea what the problem is?

Hi,

What is wrong with my CD-R writer? I got the following with a VCD:

%dd if=/dev/cd0c of=/dev/null bs=2352
dd: /dev/cd0c: Invalid argument
0+0 records in
0+0 records out
0 bytes transferred in 0.001101 secs (0 bytes/sec)

When I set bs=2048, it works. I can never play any VCD with FBSD with my
Plexwriter.

cd0 at ahc0 bus 0 target 4 lun 0
cd0: <PLEXTOR CD-R PX-R412C 1.07> Removable CD-ROM SCSI-2 device
cd0: 10.000MB/s transfers (10.000MHz, offset 8)
cd0: cd present [303323 x 2048 byte records]

I was booting the machine with a data CD inside. Will that affect
anything?

Ahh, hmm.. SCSI CDROM drive..
I haven't tried playing VCD's in one :(

Perhaps freebsd-scsi would be able to help?

Last time this question was asked here, the response was that CAM does
not support odd sector sizes.

Should I forward this to CAM as a request of features? I want to watch VCD
on my FBSD machine because I completely give up on M$ Win.

I am able to play VCDs with mplayer on my SCSI drive with the help of
tosha (found in /usr/ports/audio/tosha). Try this:

tosha -t 1 -o - | mplayer -
