Increase the suggested minimum free space for release-building. It
needed slightly over 3GB when I built one yesterday.

Is that with NOPORTS=yes and NODOC=yes? For building test releases it is
almost always ok (and faster and less disk space) to use NOPORTS=yes and
NODOC=yes.
