Then the person is allowed to use it in the UK...this is rare now.
: Will that make the person with a foreign title a British peer and a
: seat in the House of Lords?
No.There would have to be a creation of a British title for that.
(Henry Noel Bentinck was allowed to be a Count of the Holy Roman Empire
in the Uk all his life, but only when he succeeded as Earl of Portland
did he become a member of the Lords).
: Does it cost anything?
Not per se,but it would be very difficult to convince the powers that be
to do!

I thought that this was completely disallowed in 1937 by a Royal Patent.
I believe that the patent said that no other foreign titles would be
recognized and that those already recognized would be continued for a
certain period. Some were continued for the life of the holder, others
for one or more additional lives. I got this from a Burke's Peerage from
that year or the next. I don't have the cite here in my office -- it's at
home. I can give more details if someone is interested.

"rare now" includes "only happens under pre-1937 legacies since a
decision to discontinue the practice was made by an authority that could
as easily resume it"...

If you are thinking that Laird of Camster makes you a Norwegian noble
and thus eligible to sit in the House of Lords, you are even more
spaced out than we thought, Olav!!

-I am NOT talking about myself at all? Can't I aska question without
someone thinking that I think I am what I ask about?

Olav,
Do you want to become a real noble?
Apply for Dutch citizenship. When then beeing a Dutch subject you
might apply for incorporation into the Dutch Aristocracy based on your
scottish nobility. After that you might apply for British citizenship
and then apply for incorporation into the British Aristrocracy.
At that time you'll be old enough to take your seat in The House of
Lords, whereafter you'll return to Norway, apply for Norwegian
citizenship, and be recognized as a Norwegian Aristocrat.
I'll have a title for you: Greven av Laird (in Norwegian. den Lærde
Greven) And, please do give us notice if this works out. This advice
(consultation) is, by the way free for charge.
Good luck.

I know Jan is just joking, but I better stress that the Norwegian nobility was
abolished in 1821 - the nobles were allowed to use their titles until they
passed away.
Olav's "title" wouldn't mean anything here.

The one spoken of (Sea-Land) gets into Micronation directories...
last I checked they had yet to list Rhovanion, though!
(I'm King of Rhovanion, under the National Tolkien League auspices)
"Abolition" of nobility is a bad sign anywhere...who are the heirs and
what would their titles be?
