newsreader problems?

When I use 'trn' or 'tin' and I try to read 'milw.general' my newsreader
says that there are no articles to read. Yet that is impossible since
'milw.general' has new articles added to it almost hourly if not daily.
So what I do is ask to read the newsgroup anyways with the command
'g milw.general' and then I force a list of article titles with '+'.
I then get many articles that are new. It seems that something is wrong
with the article numbering system and the newsreaders think that there
are no new articles in several newsgroups when in fact there are many
new articles in these newsgroups. Does anyone have any suggestions on
how to fix this from the end-user side? This happens in many newsgroups.
