In my efforts to centralize and organize all our data in one place, I have added new sections to our new Sokiryany site (published months ago):

  1. Our newest addition is the translation to English of an article of some 24 pages published, originally in Yiddish, by Motel Poliansky. I do not remember where did I take this from, I found it in my archives. Using Google Cloud Text Detection services I extracted the texts from the pdfs (after turning them into images) and then submitted the documents to Google Document Translator. You will find the file in Files -> Publications (there are 2 links one for the Yiddish (original) and one for the Google Translated English version (I did not read it yet). Of course, the translation is far from desirable, but at least we now can have a brief idea of what the article is about.
  2. I am moving files from my archive to the new site, and I have added several files, to be found under the Files section. The work is still in progress, I am not done.
  3. I have established contact with Chernovitz's Chabad, in an attempt to retake our efforts to reach Sokiryany state documents, we did once in the distant past (10 years ago!) - for the Book of Secureni jews with Romanian Citizenship. Looks like I may find someone from the community who may visit the archive for us and photograph the material. The communication is not that straightforward, so I will keep you posted when I have news.
  4. In using Google Text Detection service to extract text from images, I realized I should be doing this to digitalize Yizkor books. I have briefly discussed this with JewishGen and IGRA but ultimately I did not make much progress - in a larger scale. For the time being, I have digitalized Secureni's book months ago - this means that its contents are now searchable. In other words, I searched for my mother's family and found an account of a survivor stating that thanks to 3 individuals, one of them my grandfather, she survived. Since I have to think about copyright issues from the New York Public Library (where I wanted JewishGen's help) - I can't simply share with you the word document with the Yizkor Book digitalized. I am trying to think of what should be the easiest and fastest way to share the search engine without sharing the original material. Will keep you updated as well whenever I have concrete stuff to share.

Amazing work Arvrumi, can't thank you enough! I'm sure everyone else is very appreciative as well. This is truly remarkable progress you report below.

About the local Chabad visiting the archives, I'd be appreciative if I can ask them to request a list of my family's vital records from Sokiryanay, ie birth / marriage records. I can provide a list of exact names, etc. I know that many in our group would be appreciative. I'd definitely be willing to pay / donate to them for that kind of effort.

About #4 regarding our Yitzkor book, can I ask if you can please check for my either of my grandparent's surnames in it? BRONFMAN / BURDMAN

Thanks,
Vlad

Can I also ask to have the following names checked in the Yizkor Book--Fainbaum  (Frieda, father Isaac) (great grandmother), Krupnick (or Crupic, Zev or Velvel) great grandfather. Anyone with the names Fainbaum or Krupnick.

Unfortunately almost nothing from the projects below was further developed.
I am, therefore, preparing a batch run on my Secureni Yizkor Book app so I can at once extract all relevant data for all the members.
I will be basing my execution on the families list I have from 2017, may not be the up-to-date version, but it is the only one I can in the group's google drive.
I will manually generate the hebrew names for each of the names that show in that spreadsheet, adding some alternative spellings I think are worth trying in order to maximize the results.
I ran a preliminary batch for all the families starting with Alef to Beit.

These are the families that start with Aleft - Beit from our Families list file.
Alper
Averbuch/Ackerboym
Baraff
Berenstein
Billiansky
Blechman
Bleichman
Bloom
Bortman
Bronfman
Bronstein
Buckvar
Buckvar
Bucstein
Burdman

Note that from the list above, I found references in the Yizkor book only for
אקרבוים (Ackerboim)
ברונפמן (Bronfman)
ברונשטיין (Bronstein)
בקבר (Buckar - alternate spelling I made up - may not be a match)

The link for the results for Alef Bet are at https://drive.google.com/open?id=1YI3Gx_xSnUuEJcTKhTI3NLpwQ4kpvvgy (I updated the output files to indicate, in addition to the page number in the original, the line and word as well, in the file name itself)

Hi Avrumi,

As you can see from the other email I just sent, I am checking back in on this group after a few months of inactivity.

Might you be able to share with me:

1) A current link for the Yizkor book names described in this thread?

2) An update on the current status of your years-long search for civil status records (birth, death, marriage) of Secureni residents?

Many thanks!

Jonah
