Hi all,
as some of you may recall, I have tried in the past (a few years now :) glueing some small projects/apps I wrote to enable digitally searching Yizkor Books contents.
The last milestone, years ago, was a Windows app where one would enter hebrew search terms and the app would return matches structured per page, line and word number.
As far as I know, very few, if at all, tested/tried.
It had the drawback, anyway, of requiring Windows machines.
Well, I was eventually fired at the end of July following a couple of layoff rounds in my company, meaning I got back to (my) business :-)
This time, however, the milestone is:
1. The interface now is a (very rudimentary) web app. In other words, anyone can use it, and no one is required to install a thing. All you need is the browser you are using to read this mail (officially, I have been testing only on Chrome, so I can't tell now how it behaves in other browsers, but I do not think there should be a problem).
2. Moreover, I have enhanced things so that I will be adding (progressively) new yizkor books over time - to the same web interface. 100% transparent to the end-user, all you are required to do is to
2.1 - pick the yizkor book you are willing to search in from the drop down list
2.2 - enter a hebrew/yiddish search term (the currently 2 supported YBs are in hebrew, so use hebrew search terms). That's it.
Note that the app helps by allowing you to click the Page column of any result entry - by opening a new tab loading that exact Yizkor Book page so you can right away look at the match you just clicked on (search for your search-term by following the line and word number shown in the result).
I hope this time this is helpful, and you can at least try it and check if your families show up in the books of your choice.
I will be adding more books soon.
Regards,
Avraham
