Escapeto Witch Mountain is a 1995 American fantasy-adventure television film written and directed by Peter Rader. It is a remake of the 1975 film of the same name.[2] The film was announced by American Broadcasting Company (ABC) in September 1994, as the third of four Disney film remakes to air on the channel, the other three being The Shaggy Dog, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, and Freaky Friday.[3][4] The film was produced by Walt Disney Television and premiered on ABC on April 29, 1995,[5] as an ABC Family Movie.
On the outskirts of a small town there is a rock formation called Witch Mountain rumored to possess mysterious powers. A young waitress, Zoe Moon, witnesses infant twin children Anna and Danny appear behind the diner in a pillar of purple light, causing her to faint from shock. When a local hermit named Bruno finds them in the bed of his truck, he moves Anna to the back of another nearby truck but is seen by Sheriff Bronson while carrying Danny and is told to freeze. The truck containing Anna drives away before she is noticed, separating the two.
Danny spends the next nine years of his life between foster families and frequently runs away. After his latest attempt is thwarted, his frustrated social worker decides to leave him at an orphanage run by Lindsay Brown. He is reunited with Anna when she saves him from Xander, an older boy at the orphanage who has a soft spot for Anna. Neither Danny or Anna are initially aware of their relationship, despite performing identical odd mannerisms. However, their newly found proximity to one another reawakens their supernatural powers and they realize that they are siblings. When Edward Bolt, a local magnate seeking to develop the nearby Witch Mountain, notices their powers, he decides to care for both of them as their foster father. Though Danny is happy with the development because he has his sister and a nice home, Anna is apprehensive about being adopted by Bolt and befriends Bolt's chauffeur, Luthor, who feels he has a connection to the twins.
During one of their outings to a purple general store, Anna uses her telekinetic abilities and catches the attention of the store's owner, Waldo Fudd. Waldo reveals he has the same abilities they do and that they are extraterrestrials from another world where everyone has a twin. When they came to Earth to explore, everyone separated due to the quarrels they experienced on Earth. Waldo has been working to reunite them all and take them home. Meanwhile, Zoe sees the purple light from the front of the shop and recognizes it and confronts Waldo to discover the fate of the twins she saw years earlier. Though he dismisses her claims, Waldo leaves her clues regarding Anna and Danny's fates if she wishes to help them.
Bolt reveals his true intention to exploit the twins' power to blast open Witch Mountain without explosives in order to obtain its valuable rock material, despite Waldo's protest that the mountain must not be tampered with. Anna discovers the truth and telepathically warns Danny, only to be held hostage by Bolt so that Danny will do as he asks. The twins are rescued by a repentant Xander, and escape to Waldo's shop on a horse that Danny communicates with to help them. Lindsay becomes suspicious of Bolt when he sends the police to retrieve the children from the shop.

The message behind this film is: Join a cult. Put your blind trust into a cause that calls to you and maybe even kill yourself for that cause. The film is tepidly insane, where the cult leader isn't even given a proper name, just "the purple guy," and Brad Dourif discovers his homeless mountain man twin brother just in time to take the leap through purple guy's portal into another dimension. Three stars.
Typical 90s disney channel original movie with a healthy dose of absurdity. I don't think I ever watched this particular one but it takes me back to those days. Obsessed with the nonsensical villain plot. And two Brad Dourifs because sure, why not.
I know this movie exists I swear this movie exists but it has somehow been erased from the internet. Elizabeth Moss, did you wipe all trace of this movie from the face of the earth? I loved this movie and without the ability to rewatch it I can only assume it is perfect
The man wants to enslavethem and capitalize on their abilities. Naturally, the siblings run away. Withnowhere else to go, Tia and Tony figure that Witch Mountain is as good a placeas any to hide away and, hopefully, to get some answers about their mysterious pastand powers.
Tia rescues a circus bear from its cage, believing it wrong for an animal to be locked up. She also saves a man from being hit by a car despite knowing that it could draw attention to her powers. Tony stands up to a bully when the boy comes after Tia.
[Spoiler Warning] It turns out that Tia and Tony have these powers because they are extraterrestrials, not witches. They eventually remember that their people came to Earth because their own planet was dying; when they are reunited with their people, they leave together in a spaceship.
Several antagonists with guns hunt down the children in an old-fashioned witch hunt, intending to kill them. (No guns are fired.) Two minions of Mr. Bolt (the man who wants to enslave Tony and Tia) are held at gunpoint with their own gun when the siblings use their powers to disarm the thugs.
Several cars wreck while chasing the children, but nobody is injured. One vehicle swerves off the road and hits a parked car, but the driver remains unharmed. Tia has flashbacks of a man saving her and Tony from a shipwreck before he apparently drowns (but not really).
Tony wins a fight with a bully by using his powers to pummel the other boy with a baseball glove and bat. He later makes a coat and broom attack a sheriff so that he and Tia can escape a jail cell. Several vicious dogs and a bear chase after people.
A child at the orphanage mocks the caretaker and steals a pen from Tia. He later fights and threatens Tony, riling up other children in the process. Tia and Tony are frightened when they are chased by dogs.
It was announced by Disney+ that a pilot for a Witch Mountain series had been ordered starring Tales of the Jedi and Jurassic World star Bryce Dallas Howard as the series lead. Howard will star as Audrey, a widow and mother to Tia, who will be portrayed by Isabel Gravitt (The Watcher). Per Disney+, "the series is a modern reinvention of the cult classic that takes place in the shadow of Witch Mountain, following two teens that develop strange abilities and discover their sleepy suburb may not be as idyllic as it seems."
Joining Howard and Gravitt on Witch Mountain are Pan and Kraven the Hunter star Levi Miller, We Crashed actor Bianca "b" Norwood and Jackson Kelly, known for his roles in The Good Doctor and Straight Man. Miller plays Ben, a troubled teen who gets paid to writes paper for other students; a troubling discovery inevitably draws him to Tia. Norwood plays Ben's best friend Corey, and the two share similar anger issues. Kelly, meanwhile, stars as Peter, Tia's closest friend and confidence who helps to solve the unfolding mysteries. All of these actors will appear in Witch Mountain as series regulars.
Travis Fickett and Terry Matalas, known for their work on 12 Monkeys and Macgyver, serve as co-writers on the series as well as executive producers. Witch Mountain will be helmed by director Augustine Frizzell and produced by ABC Signature, John Fox and John Davis of Davis Entertainment.
Disney+'s Witch Mountain is based on the 1975 cult classic Escape to Witch Mountain, which focused on orphaned extraterrestrial children with otherworldly psychic powers as they escape from those who would take advantage of their abilities. The original film was followed by Return From Witch Mountain (1978), Beyond Witch Mountain (1982), Escape to Witch Mountain (1995) and Race to Witch Mountain in 2009, which starred Dwayne Johnson.
Howard recently starred as Claire Dearing in Jurassic World Dominion, a role she reprised after appearing in Jurassic World in 2015 and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in 2018. It was also recently announced that she would voice Yaddle in Dave Filoni's upcoming animated Star Wars project Tales of the Jedi. She has also directed two episodes of The Mandalorian and one episode of The Book of Boba Fett.
