The Role of Ruminants In Reversing Global Warming
Presentation Proposal by Seth J. Itzkan, Cofounder, Soil4Climate Inc.

The Role of Ruminants In Reversing Global Warming: This presentation will discuss the coevolutionary relationship between ruminants and grasslands and the climate regulating role their interaction has played over the last 30 million years and can continue to play in present times, mitigating and hopefully helping to reverse global warming (Retallack 2013). The presentation will highlight the science, practices and policies of the emerging regenerative grazing approach essential to restoring soil carbon. The presentation will also do a 5-year review of the seminal anti-livestock report, Grazed and Confused (Garnett 2017), showing its failings in light of new studies specifically focused on regenerative grazing practices known as Adaptive Multi-paddock (AMP) or Holistic Planned Grazing. The presenter, Seth Itzkan, is twice cited in Grazed and Confused for his 2014 paper, Upside Drawdown (Itzkan 2014). Numerous case studies of regenerative grazing will be presented, several of which Seth Itzkan has visited, including properties in the United States, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.
About Seth Itzkan and Soil4Climate (a full biography of Seth Itzkan is here)
Seth Itzkan is cofounder of Soil4Climate, an international nongovernmental organization advancing the science, policy and practice of soil restoration as a climate solution. Soil4Climate provides support to regenerative grazing and agroforestry projects in multiple countries in East Africa including projects for Maasai herders in Kenya and Tanzania. The Soil4Climate Facebook group has over 32,000 members.
Seth Itzkan serves on three independent coalitions formed in the aftermath of the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) of 2021. Those are: the Global Sustainable Livestock Coalition, the Coalition of Action 4 Soil Health (CA4SH), and the Global Grassland & Savannah Dialogue Platform.
Seth Itzkan is an author of recent technical briefs on regenerative grazing and climate, including
Grazing for Soil, Climate and People: Innovative Approaches to Livestock Management that Restores Ecosystems, Mitigates Global Warming, and Enhances Food Security, a policy brief for the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS), September, 2021.
Hope Below Our Feet (compendium):: Peer-Reviewed Publications on Well-Managed Grazing as a Means of Improving Rangeland Ecology, Building Soil Carbon, and Mitigating Global Warming
By The Numbers: Technical Brief: Estimates for Soil Carbon Drawdown Through Holistic Planned Grazing and Globally by All Means, Prepared for Soil4Climate, January, 2022
Seth Itzkan advocates for regenerative grazing as an essential ally for food security, soil restoration, and carbon sequestration in grasslands. A recent presentation was given to the WWF, Carbon Sequestration on Grasslands: The Role of Ruminants, WWF, Grasslands & Savannahs Dialogue Platform meeting - April 9, 2022.
