Event Title: Grazing for Soil Health and Climate Change Mitigation, an Interview and Q&A with Dr. Jason Rowntree, Michigan State University

Event Description: Dr. Jason Rowntree, Michigan State University CS Mott Professor of Sustainable Agriculture and Director of Center for Regenerative Agriculture discusses his most recent paper: "Impact of 10 years of adaptive multi-paddock grazing on soil carbon and beef's greenhouse gas footprint in the US Upper Midwest"

Paper to be Discussed (among others)
"Impact of 10 years of adaptive multi-paddock grazing on soil carbon and beef's greenhouse gas footprint in the US Upper Midwest"
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0308521X26002477

Highlights from paper
  • On-farm beef GHG emissions were combined with data from 11-year SOC monitoring.
  • Adaptive multi-paddock (AMP) grazing was used in the grazing phases measured.
  • SOC accrual was estimated conservatively by combining measured and modeled outputs.
  • AMP grazing cut beef GHG emissions by 34–41% under the measure + model approach.
  • SOC accrual from AMP grazing may offer decade-scale GHG offsetting benefits.
Results from Paper

"AMP-grazed pastures accrued an estimated 0.52 Mg C ha−1 yr−1, based on a conservative SOC estimate informed by field measurements and model outputs. Incorporating this SOC change into the LCA reduced net GHG intensities to ∼17 kg CO2-e kg CW−1 for both systems, corresponding to 41% (AMP-GF) and 34% (AMP-FL) reductions relative to their baselines."
