an animation of global weather conditions
forecast by supercomputer from satellite remote sensing data
wind display updated every three hours
ocean currents updated every five days

surface wind:

click any map point to see data for that location
click and drag to move centerpoint
double click to zoom in
shift-double click to zoom out

click on "earth" to change dataset, or select different view & parameters

Thanks David. Totally awesome.

We need to also visually show the movement of gasses and the changes in ecosystems.

one further feature:
you can look at prior and future currents by clicking the arrows on the "control" line of the "earth" control panel.

at the moment, looks like britain is about to get swept by strong winds from the west off the north atlantic.

i especially like to higher altitude wind currents view (70 & 10 hPa) to see the now infamous "polar vortex," which is still maintaining an elongated figure "8" shape that bulges down over north america, but primarily centered over siberia.  another strong vortex has formed centered on northern spain.

and at 500 & 250 hPa, you can see the jet streams.

curious to reflect that these wind and ocean currents are somewhat illusory.  what is moving is the earth spinning underneath the water and atmosphere.  the water and air want to remain in place while the earth slides west to east underneath them, creating an illusion of the water and air moving.

another earth animation i like is from NASA titled "perpetual ocean":

Now, if only you could do years and decades into the future!

Yowza.

There really needs to be a public tool like that.
