LAUNCH OF THE  GLOBAL STATUS OF BLACK SOILS

This crucial publication presents the state of knowledge on black soils and the threats they face. Mr Yuxin Tong from the GSP Secretariat, will illustrate why black soils are known as the world's food basket and are also paramount for climate change mitigation and adaptation (as they account for 10 percent of the global soil organic carbon sequestration potential). Unfortunately, this black treasure is under threat. Mainly because of unsustainable soil management practices, most black soils suffer from moderate to severe degradation processes. This report, prepared by FAO's Global Soil Partnership and its International Network of Black Soils, reiterates the commitment towards the conservation and sustainable management of this precious resource.

PRE-LAUNCH OF THE  SOIL ATLAS OF ASIA

The Soil Atlas of Asia is the result of a collaborative effort of the FAO’s Global Soil Partnership, the Joint Research Center (EC/JRC) of the European Commission and the Rural Development Administration (RDA) of the Republic of Korea). Mr Taek-Ryoun Kwon, Director General of the RDA and Mr Arwyn Jones (EC/JRC) will deliver a presentation on the Atlas, illustrating the major threats to Asian soils.
The Atlas is timely response to the need of raising awareness on soil health among different stakeholders. More than 100 soil experts from 45 countries contributed to the publication, which portrays the rich diversity of soils in the region.
Discover Asian soils through this illustrated journey!

KIDS & SOILS

Later on in the WSD's agenda, the prize-giving for the children's contests will be an occasion to start a conversation on how we can inform the youngest about the importance of healthier soils for a better production, a better nutrition, a better environment and ultimately a better life.

KIDS2KIDS POSTER CONTEST: VOTE FOR YOUR FAVOURITES!

Children and teens were called to create posters that show how healthy soils grow healthy and nutritious food. We received over 200 amazing entries from all over the world. Now you will have the last word: vote for your favourite posters!
Voting closes on 5 December at 11:00 CET.

THE CHILDREN'S BOOK CONTEST: WHO WILL BE THE WINNER?

CELEBRATE WITH US

💬FUN ACTIVITY FOR BOTH ADULTS AND KIDS

Send your entry for the "Soil to Plate" contest! Traditionally layered dishes such as lasagnas, cakes and pies are a creative way to bring soils close to everyday life. With a little culinary experience, we can represent soil colours, textures, consistencies and the distribution of horizons, all in a 3D model that can give both children and adults an insight on the direct link between healthy soils and healthy food. Have fun preparing your dish and don't forget to share the best pictures of yourself and your culinary creation with us by 10 December 2022 to take part in the contest!
