Dear Members and Partners,
December 31, 2025 marks the end of my official term as Executive Secretary of the international “4 per 1000” Initiative.
It has been an honor and a real pleasure to lead this wonderful initiative for nearly ten years at the head of the formidable Executive Secretariat team based in Bonn, Madrid, and Montpellier. Thanks to this small group, whose membership has evolved over time to include permanent staff and consultants, we have been able to develop the “4 per 1000” Initiative into an internationally recognized and respected player in the field of soil carbon, soil health, and agroecology.
This result is largely due to the strength of your network of Members and Partners around the world, but also to the action and involvement of all past and present members of its Scientific and Technical Committee and its Bureau, who have guided and directed its actions based on the Strategic Plan 2050.
As I pass on the baton, I appreciate the work that has been accomplished, while remaining modest about what remains to be done to make nature-based solutions, particularly through agriculture and forestry, the driving forces in the fight against climate change, biodiversity erosion, desertification, and food insecurity.
I am convinced that these ideas and actions will eventually become self-evident to all public and private stakeholders, thanks to the involvement of all the international, regional, national, and local initiatives and coalitions working towards the same goal.
I have every confidence in Dr. Elen LEMAITRE-CURRI, who will take over as Executive Secretary on January 1, 2026, to continue developing the Initiative and the actions undertaken. She can count on my support in her task during the first months of the new year and beyond in my new role as Honorary President.
Thank you all for your unwavering support since December 2015 at COP 21, which saw the birth of our wonderful international “4 per 1000” Initiative.
I wish you all a Happy New Year 2026, hoping that the health of our soils will improve for the benefit of us all.

Ce 31 décembre 2025 marque la fin de mon mandat officiel de Secrétaire Exécutif de l'Initiative internationale "4 pour 1000".
Ce fut un honneur et un réel plaisir de mener cette magnifique initiative pendant près de dix ans à la tête de la formidable l'équipe du Secrétariat Exécutif basée à Bonn, Madrid et Montpellier. Grâce à ce petit groupe dont l'effectif a évolué au fil du temps autour des permanents et des consultants, nous avons pu développer l'Initiative "4 pour 1000" pour en faire un acteur connu et reconnu au niveau international dans le domaine du carbone du sol, de la santé des sols et de l'agroécologie.
C'est en grande partie à la force de votre réseau de Membres et Partenaires à travers le monde que l'on doit ce résultat, mais aussi à l'action et l'implication de tous les membres passés et présents de son Comité Scientifique et Technique et de son Bureau, qui ont guidé et orienté ses actions fondées sur le Plan Stratégique 2050.
Au moment de passer le relai, je mesure le travail accompli, tout en restant modeste à l'égards de ce qu'il reste à faire pour parvenir à faire des solutions basées sur la nature, notamment via l'agriculture et la foresterie, les éléments moteurs de la lutte contre le dérèglement climatique, l'érosion de la biodiversité, la désertification et l'insécurité alimentaire.
Je suis persuadé que ces idées et actions finiront par s'imposer comme des évidences dans l'esprit de l'ensemble des acteurs tant publics que privés, grâce à l'implication des toutes les initiatives et coalitions internationales, régionales, nationales et locales qui œuvrent dans le même sens.
J'ai toute confiance en Mme Elen LEMAITRE-CURRI qui reprend les rênes en tant que Secrétaire Exécutive dès le 1er janvier 2026, pour poursuivre le développement de l'Initiative et les actions entreprises. Elle peut compter sur moi pour l'appuyer dans sa tâche, durant les premiers mois de la nouvelle année, et au-delà dans le cadre de mon nouveau rôle de Président d'Honneur.
Merci à vous tous pour votre soutien indéfectible depuis décembre 2015 à la COP 21 qui a vu naître notre belle Initiative internationale "4 pour 1000".
Bonne Années 2026 à tous, en souhaitant que la santé de nos sols s'améliore pour notre bénéfice à tous.
