Thinking of trying it after reading a few reviews – anyone here used it long enough to judge?

I've been reading up on AI character chats for a while because I like the idea of something I can pick up for twenty minutes in the evening without committing to anything. There are plenty of options and plenty of opinions, which makes it hard to tell who's actually used one properly versus who's just repeating the marketing. I'm not looking for anything complicated – just something that doesn't feel like talking to a script, and ideally something I can try without signing up for an account. How do you actually tell whether one of these is good, beyond the first five messages?

The honest answer is that five messages tells you nothing, and that's the mistake I made for months. The way I judge it now is by coming back the next day and seeing whether the character remembers anything from the previous session. I wrote a longer honey ai review after a couple of months with it, and the memory was the thing that separated it from everything else I'd tried – it brought up small details from days earlier without me prompting it. There's over 100 characters to choose from, plus pair setups where two of them share a scene, and voice notes are included on the free tier so you can hear the quality before paying anything. You can start without an account, which makes the initial test painless. If you want a proper way to judge one of these, that's the test I'd run first.

That's a fair point – I've definitely been judging on the first few messages and then losing interest. One thing I'd like to know before I try: when you tested the memory, did you switch between characters much? I'm wondering whether jumping around muddles things, or whether each character keeps its own thread cleanly. I'd rather not end up with one bringing up something I said to another.
