I just became aware of the existence of this book, and am definitely enthused. This is the book that I wish I were smart and dedicated enough to have written!

I have told people that when they're done working on a task, the system should look like they knew what they were doing when they started, even though they didn't.  Imaging my glee, then, when I came across the following lines from Dr. Ousterhout (in bold, no less):

Ideally, when you have finished with each change, the system will have the structure it would have had if you had designed it from the start with that change in mind.
