However, despite their many benefits, abridged editions fell out of fashion somewhat in recent decades. When CDs and cassettes were still the primary means of listening to audiobooks, abridged editions were often essential due to the space constraints imposed by these physical formats. But with the transition to digital, suddenly space is no object. Listeners can enjoy an audiobook of any length, all from a single device in their pocket.

thanks. i had not even thought nabout audio books. i've read the seriesmseveral times also, however, audiobooks will be my next source. Can''t wait to hear the story! love, love, love all things Outlander.

I am also a fan of audiobooks and Davina Porter (and also about half-way through "Outlander" for the fourth time).

My "retirement" job is long-arm quilting. I listen to the books while I work and, using WhisperSync, pick up the book on Kindle where the audio left off.

I'm able to read only a few minutes a day, and read at conversation speed, so I would still be on the first reading (started about 2009) if not for Audible, Kindle and WhisperSync!

Same complaints about the Lord John narrators. Had to stop listening and just read those.

Enjoyed your post, Karen. Funny (but understandably embarrassing stuff about your co-workers - fits right in with the video you shared). :) I've shared with you before that I came to the series through audio books. I received a Kindle for a gift, and started an Audible account. Listened to a few books before I found Outlander series, and then I was addicted. Still am! I think it's time for a re-listen. :)

I love love love the audiobooks. I discovered them last year when I was going through my divorce and they literally carried me through it.

Davina is so awesome, but I always thought her take on American accents were interesting. Can't have it all, right?

Thanks for sharing!

I'm like you...skimming my way through the books. Someone recommended the audible books to me and they have been fantastic for slowing me down. I've caught all sorts of detail now! Davina does a fantastic job but I do have two complaints! (Don't hit me)I don't like her voice as Claire because I think she makes her sound too old and too prim. Also, since the TV series, I can only hear Sam and Caitriona's voices and Davina's sounds wrong!

I have a love-hate relationship with audiobooks. There are a lot of terrible ones. But I had an experience similar to yours when I listen to a Nora Roberts book... I discovered what a wonderful writer she is. I too have a bad habit of scanning and skipping when I read.

I have two favourite audiobook series. One is the "In Death" series by J.D. Robb. Reader Susan Ericksen is brilliant. The other is the Harry Potter series - I enjoyed the audiobooks more then the movies.

So now I'm listening to Outlander. I'm halfway through and enjoying it very much. The audiobooks will help pass the time until part two of season one arrives in April.

Hi Karen, I love the audio CDs of the Outlander series , and I love the fact that you can listen to them anytime , in the summer months I listen to them while walking , or while gardening , in the Winter inside at night when the TV is bad , or while even shopping or making dinner , so I keep my collection in my library, will always be an Outlander fan, please post more soon. Happy Holidays . sincerley

Hi Karen, I too love the audio CD versions of the books I too would skip parts of the story , like the medical scenes I didn't care for so I'd skip that part , so the Audio Books are perfect for learning more , I work and often can't read the entire story so listening to the CDs helps in that way, plus I love the fact that you can take them anywhere to work or to the park or to the gym , so I recommend The Outlander Series on CD for other fans to try , please post more soon. Happy Holidays. Sincerely

Looking for OUTLANDER discussions? Check out TheLitForum.com! This is Diana Gabaldon's longtime online hangout, and I have been Section Leader (moderator) of the Diana Gabaldon section on the forum since 2008. Diana is on the forum almost every day, and often responds to questions or comments from forum members, sometimes in detail. You have to register in order to read or post on the forum, but it's free.

If you chose to buy rather than borrow or rent this series, the MP3 format is the least expensive. CDs and cassette tapes are relatively affordable for Outlander and Dragonfly in Amber but Voyager and Drums of Autumn can cost considerably more. You will find significant price variations at a number of online sites so I recommend you check around before purchasing any of these books in either CD or cassette tape format.

For those of you familiar with the Outlander series, you may ask why I restricted my discussion of this series to the first four books. Primarily this is due to the fact that affordable copies of the unabridged versions of Book 5, The Fiery Cross and Book 6, A Breath of Snow and Ashes have been difficult to find in the past for purchase and often are unavailable through public library systems as well. In our September 29th Speaking of Audiobooks column, MarissaB shed some light on this confusing issue:

I found the following under Diana Gabaldon on wikipedia.com and thought you might find it interesting. The Outlander series has been released in unabridged audiobooks (read by Davina Porter) and abridged audiobooks (read by Geraldine James). The licenses for the abridged books have not been renewed and the unabridged versions, which Diana Gabaldon prefers, will be the only ones available when the licenses expire. Several of the Lord John books have been released in audiobook form, read by Jeff Woodman.

I love the series, and when I discovered it on audio I was in heaven. I agree with many of the previous comments. I listened to Outlander again this past month, and in the middle of listening I had to go reread parts in the next three books. I love the parts when Claire goes back to find Jamie and Brianna meets Jamie.

In 2014, I went on a 3 weeks rock climbing trip with a friend. I don't remember exactly why, but I thought it would be a good idea to listen to a Lord of the Rings audiobook while camping and resting.

At the time, each chapter was posted as a single video on youtube and each video had a 'mediafire.com' link in its description from which you could download the mp3.I went ahead and downloaded each mp3 to have a local copy of the complete trilogy. (we were camping in Kentucky with not-so-good wifi)

I'm really glad I did this, since we really enjoyed the books -- and finished it juuuuuust in time on the way back home -- but also I can't find the links on youtube anymore...Google will get you to the original mediafire links however.

Hopefully someone with more bandwidth can host this content so it doesn't vanish from the internets.
(That would be surprising given how easy it is to find nowadays...There are versions on youtube and soundcloud. Sharpen your google-fu)

Close to $100 doesn't sound right though as Barnes and Noble only wants around $60 for Knife of Dreams. I was looking at the US pricing though. If you are looking at Canadian pricing, you can like add another 30 to 35 dollars onto that. While the Canadian dollar is roughly equal to the US right now, pricing was determined and set when it was worth significantly less.

Actually if you wait long enought you can find the aduio cd sets unabridged on amazon.com through 3rd party dealers I got my new and factory sealed copy of Knife of Dreams for only $18.99 plus shipping that way and I am contining to watch the site for other such deals hehe.

The only exceptions are Path of Daggers and Winters Heart which currently aren't available on unabridged CD or Tape sets. Though you can download them from Audiable.com search for them by title and add the word Unabridged in the search string, since Audible and Amazon are linked you can search from either site to find it.

The first 3 months are 7.95, one book a month(the lowest plan), but that is less than 24 dollars for the first three books. About $160 for all 12 books on this plan. Audible does have copy protection on the books but has downloads for iPods and mp3 players and you can use Nero(free)to burn the books to CD. PLUS, on the KOD book RJ gives an exclusive interview to Audible. He states he does not read his own books, but he does listen to see that the readers are getting the point of the books and makes corrections from that.
