AdobeAfter Effects is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application developed by Adobe Inc.; it is used for animation and in the post-production process of film making, video games and television production. Among other things, After Effects can be used for keying, tracking, compositing, and animation. It also functions as a very basic non-linear editor, audio editor, and media transcoder. In 2019, the program won an Academy Award for scientific and technical achievement.[3]

After Effects was originally created by David Herbstman, David Simons, Daniel Wilk, David M. Cotter, and Russell Belfer[4] at the Company of Science and Art in Providence, Rhode Island. The first two versions of the software, 1.0 (January 1993)[5] and 1.1, were released there by the company. CoSA, whose CEO was William J. O'Farrell. CoSA with After Effects was acquired by Aldus Corporation in July 1993, which in turn was acquired by Adobe in 1994. Adobe acquired PageMaker as well. Adobe's first new release of After Effects was version 3.0.

Plug-ins are predominantly written in C or C++[6] and extend the functionality of After Effects, allowing for more advanced features such as particle systems, physics engines, 3D effects, and the ability to bridge the gap between After Effects and another application.

After Effects Scripts, unlike plug-ins, can only access the core functionality of After Effects.Scripts are often developed to automate repetitive tasks, to simplify complex After Effects features, or to perform complex calculations that would otherwise take a long time to complete.[7]

While not dedicated to compositing, the open source software Blender contains a limited node-based compositing feature which, among other things is capable of basic keying and blurring effects.[11][12][13]

After Effects uses a system of layers organized on a timeline to create composites from still images and motion footage, such as video files. Properties such as position and opacity can be controlled independently for each layer, and each layer can have effects applied. After Effects is often described as the "Photoshop of video", because its flexibility allows compositors to alter video in any way they see fit, as Photoshop does for images.

Although After Effects can create images of its own, it is generally used to composite material from other sources to make moving graphics (also known as motion graphics). For example, with a picture of a space ship and a picture of a star background, After Effects Templates could be used to place the ship in front of the background and animate it to move across the stars.

Each picture or movie is layered on a timeline, in a similar way to a Non-Linear Editing System (NLE). However, one difference between After Effects and NLEs is that After Effects is layer-oriented, and NLEs are generally track-oriented. This means that in After Effects, each individual media object (video clip, audio clip, still image, etc.) occupies its own track. However, NLEs use a system where individual media objects can occupy the same track as long as they do not overlap in time. This track-oriented system is more suited for editing and can keep project files much more concise. The layer-oriented system that After Effects adopts is suited for extensive effects work and keyframing. Although other compositing packages--especially ones that employ tree or node workflows, such as Apple Shake--are better suited to manage large volumes of objects within a composite, After Effects is able to somewhat counter the clutter by selectively hiding layers (using the Shy switch) or by grouping them into precompositions. (After Effects does feature a Flowchart panel, which is similar to tree or node graph, but this view of a composition is mostly for display purposes and is not fully functional.) The main interface consists of several panels (windows in versions prior to After Effects 7.0). Three of the most commonly used panels are the Project panel, the Composition panel, and the Timeline panel. The Project panel acts as a bin to import stills, video, and audio footage items. Footage items in the Project panel are used in the Timeline panel, where layer order and timing can be adjusted. The items visible at the current time marker are displayed in the Composition panel.

After Effects was originally created by the Company of Science and Art in Providence, RI, USA. Version 1.0 was released in January 1993. Version 2.1 introduced PowerPC acceleration in 1994. CoSA along with After Effects was then acquired by Aldus corporation in July 1993; this company was then acquired by Adobe in 1994, and with it PageMaker and After Effects. Adobe's first new release of After Effects was version 3.0.

After Effects has extensive plug-in support; and a broad range of third party plug-ins are available. A variety of plug-in styles exist, such as particle systems for realistic effects for rain, snow, fire, etc.

Using third-party plug-ins, After Effects can create 3D effects. These sorts of 3D plug-ins use basic 2D layers from After Effects. Illustrator graphics can also be loaded and rendered in 3D using plug-ins such as Zaxwerks 3D Invigorator Pro. Some well-known plug-in vendors are Automatic Duck, BorisFX, Conoa, Cycore Effects, DigiEffects, Digital Anarchy, Digital Film Tools, The Foundry, FXhome, Gen Arts, GridIron Software, RE:Vision Effects, Red Giant Software, Synthetic Aperture, Trapcode and Zaxwerks.

In addition to 3D effects, there are plug-ins for making video look like film or cartoons; simulating fire, smoke, or water; particle systems; slow motion; creating animated charts, graphs, and other data visualization; calculating the 3D movement of a camera in a 2D video shot; eliminating flicker, noise, or rigging lines; translating timelines from FCP or Avid; adding high-end color correction; and other workflow improvements and visual effects.

I've made a text effect preset that's pretty cool and I'm thinking about selling my presets later down the road. I had a question regarding their compatibility. I use a Mac: Late 2015, 40gb ram and Am using Adobe After effects cc 2018, version 15.0.1. I was curious if I made a preset in that after effects version, would it compatible with earlier versions of after effects? Let me know

If you create the preset in an older version of After Effects, it will work in the newer versions with no issues. If you create a preset in the current version of After Effects, it will not date back, instead, it will error out. This is the error message you get:

I would backdate your project and open it in an older version then resave the preset. That should work as long as you are not using any newer effects. You can download as earlier as CS 6 for After Effects. I actually keep CC 2014 on my system since it is the last one with the old engine. (Brainstormer and Pingpong)

i thought AE would create a reduced copy of the current project

BUT instead of doing so it just reduced the project i was working on not making a copy!

now im left with just this one composition in my AE project and it seems that work of more than weeek is lost

for next time: collecting and reducing a project does NOT create copies?

so, if i have to send out a reduced version of a project, but still wana keep the big one to myself, i have to make a copy of the AE project in the finder and then reduce the duplicated version of the project in AE? (because i thought recalling after effects CS4 doing a copy automatically of the current project when i collected and reduced a project)

Collect files should be saving another copy of your project, unless you pointed it to the very same that your current AEP resides in and overwrote it (which should have also required confirming a dialog box).

I was working on some afeter effects file at on a more up to date computer. I have travelled to my second computer, an OS High Sierra. The after effetc files in the creative clpoud are greyed out, plus I cannopt find even an old copy of AfterEffects. I was working on this computer a month ago, in aftereffects... now all disappeared.

Check your Creative Cloud account: Make sure that your subscription is active and that the correct Adobe ID is logged in on your High Sierra computer. If the files are still greyed out, try signing out and back in again.

Download an older version of After Effects: If you suspect that the files were created in an older version of After Effects, you can try downloading an older version that's compatible with your OS High Sierra computer. Go to the Creative Cloud app, find After Effects, and click the "Install" button. From there, you should see a dropdown menu that allows you to choose an older version to download.

Check your file format: Make sure that the files you're trying to open are in a format that's compatible with After Effects. If they're in an unsupported format, you may need to convert them before you can open them in After Effects.

Contact Adobe Support: If none of these solutions work, you can contact Adobe Support for further assistance. They may be able to help you troubleshoot the issue and find a solution that works for your specific situation.

Any version older than 22.0 won't be available to download anymore. Only the latest and one major version behind the latest version are available. Please share the full crash report so we can find the root cause.

After Effects started working again but I keep getting the same issue all the time when it is runnung. The AE freezes and 1 minute later my laptop shuts down and reboots. It hapens only when I run After Effcts (22 or 23, tried both). That's really annoying, as I have to save on every step. And it can happen after an hour of work or literally 10 seconds after I start new project.

If you haven't done so already, please try resetting the application preferences. If that doesn't resolve the issue, consider changing the video renderer to Software Only by going to File > Project Settings.
