Hi everyone!

Happy December / holidays / etc.  The year is over... almost!  Hope you're all enjoying the year-end recaps, debates over the recaps, and occasional discoveries that creep forth from the recaps.  Kind of weird (for me), but I haven't read many of them yet...

There's two new Soft Abuse releases out now, but dropped in later November but I realized I forgot to tell you all about them.  And these shouldn't be forgotten, it's two heavy ones from two of my personal favorites: Pigeons and Ulaan Khol
Pigeons first shared a few rough demos for They Sweetheartstammers about a year ago while on tour with Fabulous Diamonds, but the end result was a whole other trip: zoned free-form tunes (that remind me of Meddle or Broadcast at their most atmospheric) with some pure-pop moments, all of which are of course pretty out there in their own right.  They Sweetheartstammers features the more recent full-band version of Pigeons, too, with Jason Meagher on bass and Pensacola punk lgend Ben Bogan on drums (Nathan Bowles is in the live formation).  It's a far cry from their previous work, yet retains the same feel & of course Wednesday's ripping guitar work is there, too.
I first heard Ulaan Khol's La Catacomb a while back -- this was music Steven R. Smith made after finishing his Ceremony series recordings.  It's far different from those efforts, too; La Catacomb is a claustrophobic, insular work. None of the the blistering parts of Ceremony are here, instead Smith gives us ruminations, dirges.  These songs offer more smoulder than flame, an apt description for the fate of this music, too, which lay dormant & unlreased (having shuffled labels) before landing at Soft Abuse.  Smith thought a cassette would be good & we agreed -- La Catacomb is here.

These two round out a fairly busy year of releases for Soft Abuse...  More on that in a bit...

Lots more bubbling as well, but here's the scoop on ordering the new stuff (if yr inclined) --

Yeah, a lot for 2011....  2012 will probably be a lot less busy, though anything's possible.
For those that haven't heard much of these, & for the curious I've created a set over at our SoundCloud page that features something from each of this year's releases.  Take a listen & DL what you like (don't forget you can order from us, too!) right here: http://soundcloud.com/soft-abuse/sets/soft-abuse-2011/

2012??

What's around the bend?  There's a lot brewing, but only a few things we can talk about with certainty at the moment...
First up is the brilliant & crushing new Pumice album, Puny.  Our hero Stefan Neville has returned from a long break of Pumice activity to deliver another poignant bomb.  Recorded on his new 8-track and masterfully mastered by Patrick Klem, Puny features organ dirges, melancholy pop tunes and a few experiemental bits as well.  This one will be a tri-format release (CD, CS, LP) with a little something extra tossed in.  I'm thinking that March is likely for this one.  In the meantime, here's a super-secret link to the first song from the album: http://soundcloud.com/soft-abuse/pumice-hey-crap-crab/s-VC1xi (this is only for email list people).
Also happening is a great thick slab from Myrrh, a slow & very heavy Minneapolis doom-ish duo. The recordings were made quickly and were released as a cassette from the band just in time for an ad hoc tour. The songs have been re-mastered and will appear as a lovely ltd LP at some point in the spring. Expect some nice, but not outlandish packaging with this & of course expect some rumble.  Again we have another super-secret sample to share; this is only for you list friends: http://soundcloud.com/soft-abuse/myrrh-untitled/s-vWILl

More happening, of course, including a new project from Steven R. Smith (Ulaan Markhor) that I'm listening to as I type this, the second long player from Langtry, a single from Pigeons, and more yet...  Stay tuned.

New Site

Our web site (www.softabuse.com) got a much-needed facelift this year.  After scrapping the first few designs, I settled on something that doesn't look much different than what was there before, but is something that is hopefully more functional & pleasing to the eye.  This couldn't have actually happened without the hours of technical expertise of my pal Annie.  If anything seems off, if links don't work, anything of that sort, please get in touch.  There are still a few minor tweaks to smooth over.
One new page worth mentioning is the A / V page (http://softabuse.com/a-v.html
) which contains loads of videos & freebie mp3s.

Distributed / Deals

We've got a great batch of fairly newly distributed things for sale now & more in the way.  In addition, I made a small page of catalog "deals" that will reward you for purchasing a few things.  To check these deals, go here: http://www.softabuse.com/catalog/specials
Below is a list of our recent distributed releases -- all are available in very limited supply.

Primitive Motion - By Arc or Chord (CDR) -- http://www.softabuse.com/catalog.php?catno=PRM001
Pigeons - No Shore (CS) -- http://www.softabuse.com/catalog.php?catno=PNS003
Julian Lynch - Terra (LP) -- http://www.softabuse.com/catalog.php?catno=JUL001

Any day now we'll have copies of the debut LP from Horrid Red (Celestial Joy), all the way from Italy.  We'll also soon have a few copies of the new self-released solo LP from Steven. R. Smith, Old Skete.  Drop a line if you wanna pre-order either from us (these aren't on the site yet).  Thanks.

Artist Updates

Blackout Beach
There's a new, unbelievably brilliant BB album out now on Dead Oceans called Fuck Death.  It's been on near-repeat here at home, so great.

Brute Heart
Lots happening with these three. They were recently profiled by Lavender Magazine, and were also included amongst the top 14 local albums for 2011 by City Pages. The band have two 7"s in the works for next year, one each for M'Lady's and Water Wing (a new offshoot of Mississippi).

Horrid Red
After two singles for Sift Abuse this year, the band released their debut album via Brave Mysteries (CS version) and Holidays (LP). A US version of the LP is imminent from Terrible Records, and more new recordings are in the works...

Pigeons
The band finished a few days touring in the UK and EU this fall, and have plans for more US shows in the spring of 2012.  Check out this photo from their London gig -- http://pigeonsband.com/LONDON.2011.jpg
I also uploaded some live tracks the band cut at Black Dirt to SoundCloud, have a listen to these (& DL them, too!): http://soundcloud.com/soft-abuse/sets/pigeons-live-at-black-dirt/
There are two stellar videos out there from the new album, Tournoi (directed by Amy Ruhl) and The Welcome (directed by Camilla Padgitt-Coles). Have a look.

Primitive Motion
These two have been busy recording & performing, and are rumored to have two albums in the can (!!). Perhaps too soon to mention what 2012 holds for them, but look for more releases shortly...

Pumice
Stefan played a launch gig for the LP release of Pebbles & enlisted the help of Rosy Parlane.  The pair played the album from to back, I'm sure it was incredible. I hope to have my hands on some footage from the night shortly; check out some photos from that evening here: http://petrajane.com/words/?p=632

Donovan Quinn
Ol' DQ has a new album in the can, titled Honkey Tonk Medusa (!!).  Northern Spy will released it in February, at which point our man Quinn will embark on a series of tours in support.  More on that to come...

Semi-Current Listening Pile

The Garbage & The Flowers - Stoned Rehearsal LP (Quemada)
Paul Ngozi - The Ghetto LP (Shadocks)
Blackout Beach - Fuck Death LP (Dead Oceans)

Nothing but happy wishes to you all in the year(s) ahead.

Take care,

Chris / Soft Abuse
