Happy February:
Winter’s grip is very tight here – hope all’s well & warm where you are.
First release of 2011 is a brilliant EP, Pink Flowers, from Horrid Red, a new-ish project from 3/4s of Teenage Panzerkorps. Horrid Red scratches more of a pop itch than does Der TPK, but only to a degree; Bunker Wolf’s vocal growl is still as menacing as ever. This one’s a dual format release – the 7” (ltd to 300) features three songs & the cassette edition (ltd to 50) features a longer seven-song programme. All seven tracks are included on the download that accompanies either version. Cassette fans are encouraged not to sleep on this one; I think they might go quickly… Pink Flowers EP is released officially on February 15, but we’re already shipping these out… More info below, too.
Up next is the debut single from Primitive Motion, a primitive pop exploration from Leighton Craig & Sandra Selig. Sandra’s cut-poetry art is the basis for the lyrics & Leighton’s casio provides the backing (there’s also drums, flute and other accompaniment). This one’s release date is March 15, but pre-orders are happening now. It’s limited to 300 copies.
Also newsworthy is an event we’re putting together in June. Can’t say much yet (consider yrself teased), but will undoubtedly spill the beans about it all soon. Should be excellent.
Short update this time around, here goes…

HORRID RED Pink Flowers EP 7” + DL / CS + DL (SAB044)
Horrid Red is an offshoot of ex-Siltbreeze creeps Teenage Panzerkorps (DER TPK). While DER TPK stirs a blown-out post-punk frenzy, Horrid Red takes a slightly more delicate approach. The first 12", Empty Lungs, on Holidays Records dealt in dark, depressive synth-punk, but the Pink Flowers EP is far more pop-oriented, though in the way Can's Future Days or mid-80's Fall records are pop. German-born vocalist Bunker Wolf remains as disturbing as ever & almost more bizarre when set against these melodic guitars & synth-drenched music. Their debut was a pick of the day from German Vice, too.
Pink Flowers EP is available as a
7" single in a edition of 300 copies, and as a cassette in an edition of
50. Both include a digital download code with extra tracks, one of which
created in collaboration with Clay Ruby (Burial Hex).

BANDCAMP!
Bandcamp is awesome. Several friends of Soft Abuse have created Bandcamp pages of late; digital shoppers are definitely encouraged to purchase digital releases directly from the source…
A Bandcamp round-up -
Carey Mercer’s Blackout Beach project has bequeathed two stellar albums & to date has performed once live. A document of the performance is newly available via Bandcamp – it’s as great as you’d expect.
Steven R. Smith’s now-dormant (?) project Hala Strana has a new digital-only released available via Bandcamp. Compendium collects a whole slew of stray tracks including those from White Sleep lathe single and Karst EP (on Jewelled Antler). Essential.
HR’s Edmund Xavier’s stacked Bandcamp site features music from a whole host of his projects, including Teenage Panzerkorps, FWY! & yes, Horrid Red. Set some time aside & give it all a listen.
