Congratulations to our very own Orlando Luna, Senior Systems Engineer
at Apple, who has been awarded System Engineer of the Year for the
U.S. Channel. The awards are presented at the annual conference of
Apple's Sales channel division. They are given to Account Executives,
Engineers and Operations personnel across the world.

As some of you may recall, Orlando Luna is one of the founding members
of the South Florida Final Cut Pro Users Group. When he started the
group in 2001, Final Cut Pro was in its infancy, and Orlando was
working as a fashion/editorial still photographer. Since then, he
expanded his skills to include services as videographer, editor, and
Apple Certified Trainer. He has been employed by Apple as Senior
Systems Engineer since September 2006.

There is a technique I see from time to time when doing a move on a
still photograph, the background is separated and apparently enlarged
slightly to allow a foreground move slightly offset from the
background as you zoom into or pan across a still photo image. It
creates the appearance of a move on a 3 dimensional, live image. It
makes a still photograph read in a video move as a multi dimensional
image. i can think of a number of ways to do this from scratch in
photoshop but I'm thinking it's a plug in that someone already has done.

Check out the FxFactory Pan and Zoom freebie plug-in. Works with Final
Cut, Motion or After Effects. You have to have Leopard installed to
run it.

"The Pan and Zoom plug-ins let you create the photo animation style
made popular by Ken Burns with intuitive controls and automatic motion
control that achieves stunning results without a single keyframe."

There are similar plug-ins out there. Anybody care to share their favorite?

Dam you Orlando!
I'm so jealous.

But Seriously...
All the best Orlando!
It couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Orlando has been a great help to
me and always generously shared his time and knowledge. Even when I
had stupid questions, he never so much as once snickered at me.

Thanks and all the best to you my friend,

Brooks

Toolfarm's plug-in finder is a great resource.

Take a look at Lyric Media Pan Zoom Pro and Stagetools MovingPicture
listed on that page.

Good luck!

The problem with most plugins that I have seen is they do not do the "real" Ken Burns effect.  They simply animate the still on a flat plane.  To accomplish what is the "real" Ken Burns effect...you have to mask or bezier cut out featured elements of the flat still...move them to a different depth of field and then animate either the camera or the planes.  And you have to clone the background to fill the holes that  you create when you "cut out" the feature that you want to animate.

The folks at Digital Juice actually have a great tutorial on their website on how to accomplish this fairly quickly in AFX.  Cant recall the name of it...you will just have to search thru them...I believe it is in the "Cutting Class" editing tutorials.

Thanks Marian, Marlene, Brooks and everyone else who has contacted me offline. My involvement with the User Group is always something I will view as having been and continuing to be a contribution to everything I have learned and continue to learn. Brooks as far as "stupid questions" I don't remember any... The fact that you have made such a successful transition from the audio world to the video world contradicts the opinion that there are any "stupid questions".
