Hi. I just received a file in MPG-4. Everything is O.K. I put the file in the FCP pro Express and it looks good but I don't understand why the file ends in: .m4v. Is this an special format of mpg-4?..Thanks to read.
Julian.

Quoting file-extensions.org:

m4v is used in Apple iTunes and iPod. It can be renamed to MP4 file extension.
MP4 is a container format. As any other container format like AVI (.avi), RealMedia (.rm, .rmvb), QuickTime (.mov), MPEG (.mpg, .mpeg), Matroska (.mkv, .mka), OGM (.ogm) it allows you to combine different multimedia streams (mostly audio and video) into one single file.
MP4 is a file extension for the container format defined in the Systems Part of the MPEG-4 standard (ISO 14496-1).
MP4 supports all kinds of multimedia content (multiple audio streams, video streams, subtitle streams, pictures) and advanced content (called "Rich Media" or "BIFS") like 2D and 3D graphics, user interactivity, DVD-like menus.
MP4 is a streamable format.

But how is is that video encoded in the mp4 format look "washed out"
but m4v encodes look pristine? Is it because m4v uses h.264
compression codecs?

Thank you very much for your answer. The codec is 640x352 codec integer little endian h264.
What I need to know is if can send this file in mov with mpg4 format that looks good. The video looks kind of wash out and is 6 minutes with  106 megabites.

Hi Group,

I have a great little hd camcorder and a pro still camera I am selling. Is it appropriate to put the information in an email to the group or not. If not, where can I list the details?

Also, is anyone in the group shooting with the new Panasonic GH1 dslr video camera?

Thanks!

Larry

Mpg.4 is the same as H.246 and AVCHD. The wrapper is slightly different as explained in Allen Teppers article but they are all essentially the same. Mpg4 is used as an acquistion format in many of the new cameras such as the Canon 5d. It is also used as a delivery format and IMHO is the best format when you need to compress video. It is also cross platform compatible and works in Flash.
