Dear Group,

I spent the week in NYC doing interviews with a Broadway star and three Broadway costume designers. Leaving from LGA, I went through the TSA Pre cleared lane. No need to remove the camera from the bag, the computer from the suitcase, shoes from the feet. Total ease for the frequent traveler. Right?

The security guard held onto my camera bag which held my camera and two externals for double backing up and kept it sitting beside him at the xray machine. I kept asking for it, and he did not relinquish it. Finally another guard took it and did multiple swipes, keeping it beside another xray machine.

Tonight when I went to transcribe my tapes, I discovered my video has vanished. I still have audio but there is no video.

My week's work--which I might add took more than a month to set up the interview--is gone. Plus the plane tickets, the hotel, etc., all for nothing.

I will happily listen to any suggestions.

Thanks,
Grace

X-ray machines will fog film, but not harm your video tapes, cards, drives, etc,. Metal detectors, on the other hand, will effect your media. Keep camera's recorders and all media away from the Metal detectors. I always run my gear through the x-ray machines to avoid the metal detectors. Making a back up copy of your media and shipping it to yourself through Fed Ex or UPS will also add another layer of safety. Unfortunately, you are out of luck this time. The TSA strikes again, buffoons that they are.

Grace, the X-ray and metal detector have very little to no effect on you media, even when shooting on tape it requires a very powerful magnet or Demagnitizer or magnetic Tape eraser that is 100 times more powerful then the hand held metal detectors the TSA uses.

Roger has some good tips but what I do is a three step backup.
1-transcode the footage into your edit system on a work drive.
2-back up the shot raw footage on a 2nd drive.
3-if you shoot with P2, SD cards, CF cards put them in your pocket or protective case.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

Whether or not it was the X-ray or metal detector that erased my video I have no idea. I am very aware it should not have happened which is why I wanted to warn you. I have written to the head of TSA at LGA, so perhaps they will recalibrate that particular station.

I did all three of the following suggestions. The thing that saved me is that I had not formatted the cards. Also I had copied the footage of my most important interview onto my laptop so I could transcribe it on the plane. I am lucky.

Best,
Grace

It's the first time I hear that and have passed many times though X-rays including third world countries and had no problem. And sometimes passed it through the machine a couple of times. Weird!
