Upload your media before traveling or as Roger says mail it to yourself. Also file a complaint with TSA. If you insure your shoot you might be able to file a claim. So sorry that this happened to you. Fear of others is removing so much of our quality of life.

It will make me more wary

    Dear Group,

I spent the week in NYC doing interviews with a Broadway star and three Broadway costume designers. Leaving from LGA, I went through the TSA Pre cleared lane. No need to remove the camera from the bag, the computer from the suitcase, shoes from the feet. Total ease for the frequent traveler. Right?

The security guard held onto my camera bag which held my camera and two externals for double backing up and kept it sitting beside him at the xray machine. I kept asking for it, and he did not relinquish it. Finally another guard took it and did multiple swipes, keeping it beside another xray machine.

Tonight when I went to transcribe my tapes, I discovered my video has vanished. I still have audio but there is no video.

My week's work--which I might add took more than a month to set up the interview--is gone. Plus the plane tickets, the hotel, etc., all for nothing.

I will happily listen to any suggestions.

    Thanks,
    Grace

X-ray machines will fog film, but not harm your video tapes, cards, drives, etc,. Metal detectors, on the other hand, will effect your media. Keep camera's recorders and all media away from the Metal detectors. I always run my gear through the x-ray machines to avoid the metal detectors. Making a back up copy of your media and shipping it to yourself through Fed Ex or UPS will also add another layer of safety. Unfortunately, you are out of luck this time. The TSA strikes again, buffoons that they are.

Try to upload your media to toast or to mpegstreamclip. That worked to me once
