Hi Jon!

Three SPROG cooks, all members of SOC, just chatted (David German, Sandy Stibitz, and I) about a SPROG/SSC Cookbook project, one of the SOC pet projects this term. We're currently reaching out to trainers/cooks to collect recipes, and our goal is to have a final product of some sort by the holidays, to plug winter gathering (if that happens), wish happy new year, and perhaps hold a holiday fundraiser and sell the cook books.

I wanted to get in touch with you about the possibility of this: making hard copies of cookbooks and outreaching to members of the SSC community (alums, sproggers, staff, student leaders, etc) to purchase a cookbook as a gift to a fellow ssc'er or a financial gift to the SSC. It'd be great if SOC could use its creativity and mission of community engagement to fundraise, but I wasn't sure if there would be some legal or logistical snags to this plan? 

(covering the upfront costs of printing/binding books, whether or not we could sell without getting published?)

Do you have any thoughts or ideas? If hard copies prove too difficult, we're still interested in pursuing the online route, but we wanted to explore the possibilities.

I love the Sprog cookbook idea--we can actually use the new SSC site for this.  The climate crossroads section has a recipesection; if everyone adds their recipes to it and tags them with 'sprog' we could have an evolving on-line repository of great sprog recipies accessible year after year.

And it would be another great way to drive folks to the site.

Hey Caroline, et al,

I'm not sure what, if any legal snags might exist...I guess it would depend on whether recipes that folks wanted to include came from originally.  If they're from another cook-book, I'd guess they are probably copyrighted and therefore we wouldn't be able to include them. 

On the logisitcal end of things, the front end costs could vary drastically depending on the stock and quality of the paper, whether it's black & white or color.  I think if you're going to produce a hard copy for sale, you'll want to invest significant time on layout/design so that it is an attractive product to help entice people to buy a copy. 

I'd recommend doing some research on what the front end costs are, depending on quantity, and do a cost analysis to see if you think you can recoup costs and make a profit (i.e. how many sales would you need to break even?  to make a profit?).
