Hey Jon and Kristin- I just wanted to check and see if you'd seen this googledoc (link and text below) and if you had any thoughts? Kristin -- SOC is super excited about the Peer 2 Peer Program; and we really appreciate all the work you've put in so far; the link and survey on the website look great! As we get rolling on the official program, we'd love to have you on board, if you're interested and able. We have ideas about how you could fit in throughout the year.

 

Take a look at the program's structure [in the google doc], and let us know what you think as far as plugging in! The tasks we have laid out with you in mind aren't set in stone -- but they are laid out in a calendar for the program, to keep us all on track if you want to get involved.

 

Also, would it be possible to get access to the googleform, or wherever p2p sign-up info from the website is going, so that we can keep track of who's interested?

 

Lastly, in an effort to shift away from the connotations that "mentorship" carries, SOC decided to rename the program "peer to peer exchange". Would you mind tweaking the messaging sligthly on the website to reflect this change? Specifically, on http://ssc.sierraclub.org/resources/index.html "NEW! Peer to Peer Mentorship Program" and "With a Mentor, You'll:". Sorry for the nit-pickiness, we just want to make avoid confusion over the nature of the program. Thanks!

Jon -- SOC definitely would like to accommodate ACE to reach out to high schoolers and diversify the program. Our initial thought is that we can add a new specification on the sign-up form where participants can consent to a more 'mentorship' geared pairing! Did you have anything else in mind about what this would look like or how SOC should manage it? We're definitely open to suggests, while cognizant that our capacity as a committee is somewhat limited; with this in mind, the proposal in this googledoc sketches out the SOC P2P working group's role, and we've also added our thoughts about how staff could play a role! Peer 2 Peer Exchange Program

Sponsored by the Support, Outreach, and Community Subcommittee [SOC SUB]

 

Want to hone your organizing skills, share insights and goals, get support in your region, talk about the movement, commiserate with a fellow climateer, or just link into the wonderful community that is the SSC??

Well, the P2P program is for you!

 

Goal: To strengthen the SSC community around the country, build personal relationships and develop leaders, and reach our campaign and personal goals.
 

Registration period: Sign-up is now available online and will be open until September 14! http://ssc.sierraclub.org/resources/index.html 

**Recruitment: 

• Aug 9-14 SHINDIG: SOC will use a general sign-up sheet for interested shindiggers, make announcements at mealtimes (ex. prior to the "p2p pilot buddy face-time lunch"), utilize Cons Comm and SOC meetings to generate interest, and spread the excitement at the SOC Hop for recruitment.
• In an effort to incorporate staff and alum into the program, SOC is seeking help from Jon or other staff: ex. in providing recommendations, contact info or avenues for outreach.  

 

  
Facilitation from SOC: P2P is designed to be flexible -- you'll be matched up with someone who seems compatible to your own goals and expectations for the program. Phone convos, e-mail, facebook, letters, face-to-face -- it's all possible! SOC will help you both get things going and will check in regularly to provide inspiration, and to make sure things are going smoothly.

 

• Aug 21st: One week after Shindig, SOC [working group] will send out an e-mail reminder about the program to current p2p pilot participants (?), Sproggers who expressed interest on their exit-survey, Shindiggers who put their name on the sign-ups, and any alum/staff contacts we can get our mitts on. The e-mail will contain info about the program and direct readers to the SSC website to register.
• Sept 15-31st: SOC [working group] will pair-up buddies and send out an introductory p2p e-mail on October 1, the official p2p launch date.

 

• End of each month: SOC [working group] will be responsible for monthly e-mails to each participant with conversation starters, news from the movement/SSC, and a request for feedback in e-mail form. We can use the feedback to get an idea of how things are going, and adjust support for pairs depending on the feedback. The working group will decide in mid-September whether to centralize e-mails to participants, or to create 3-4 'buddy lists' for each member of the group to be responsible for.
• Regularly (?): SOC [working group] with help from Kristin via web outreach can target a few superstar pairs for interviews towards the end of the semester. A video or written testimonial can go on the SSC site! Also, these "success stories" can be used to provide inspiration in email form to other pairs. (see below)
• Jan, May :SOC [working group] with help from Kristin via web outreach will issue program-wide survey in early January and again at the end of May. SOC [working group] will develop survey, and Kristin can circulate/share SOC on the data collected. The data will help begin the conversation of what is going well in the program, and what about the structure may need to change [immediately or in the next year].

• Late April: SOC [working group] will develop a flier for Sprog folders and get in touch with Jon about having P2P on Sprog Action Plans again.
  • Late May: If Shindig and T4T are combined, SOC [working group] will coordinate P2P face time to close out the program.

 

 

Recommendations on Kristin's Role:

• In addition to the tasks identified above, Kristin can offer technical support through the website:

   

  • by adding a question on the registration form reading "Are you interested in being in a traditional 'mentorship' pairing? I.E. this would be a high school student involved with ACE paired with an SSC college student.

   

  • by adding a sentence on the SSC website under the program description clarifying that the registration period ENDS on September 14. This way, people won't feel like we are ignoring them for a month.

   

 

Concerning ACE:

• Jon can direct ACE to the SSC website to sign up for the program, and get them in contact with SOC on ways we can realistically tailor the program to their needs (ex. draft an outreach email to ACE participants, develop a short guide for SSC "mentors", etc.). SOC would like to have a good understanding of ACE's needs and SOC's role in addressing them prior to the program launch.  

 

Length of program: Pairs will be corresponding for the 2009-2010 school year! Participants for the 09-10 year will be asked/encouraged to participate for the 2nd year of the program.
