Hi Gardeners,
It is that time and the seasons are upon us ... Halloween and Thanksgiving.
We need to seriously clean up the garden and get out‼️
The almanacs correctly predicted our first frost and on last Sunday, temperatures dipped down into the 30s. If you have house plants then it is wise to begin moving them inside and in some cases covering them to keep them from freezing and dying. Here's a tip ... Good time to remove dahlia bulbs from the soil, clean them up ( not wet) and place in cool, dry place where temperatures are about 50 degrees. You can use shredded newspaper to wrap them.
To return to our task at hand, John has sent reminders and I have been communicating about the time as closing approaches.
I need something from you as well. This year was particularly challenging as we operated on a skeleton committee. Our weather was cool and warm sun came late in the season, aren't we glad that we are not farmers!
*Yes, I need to hear from you with suggestions and recommendations about how to improve communication, community and viability. Without your participation, the community garden will not survive. One sticking point was the amount of unharvested food that goes to waste in the garden. I will share with you one note from a fellow gardener ...
"I noticed that there are several plots that look like they have not been visited in a while but which still have gorgeous plants / vegetables (tomatoes, squash, kale, parsley, etc.) I was wondering whether these plots may go unharvested and thought you might want to reach out directly to those gardeners to make sure that they were aware and were planning on coming down to take their vegetables. If for some reason they are not, then perhaps they want to donate to the food pantry? Anyway, I just wanted to make sure that one way or another these vegetables don't go to waste." HS
The garden officially closes on 2nd November ❄️and we must clear the plots of all vegetation and supports / leave nothing there‼️ *Olivia.
