Anon, I could rant about how Skyler has been treated for days. She's a canon woobie to me, especially in S5. Maybe she isn't physically beaten or shown at the absolute depths of emotional despair as often as Jesse is, but she gets slammed around pretty hard within the series (and worse by fandom) and she tries so heartbreakingly hard to hold it all together and make it work.
I think she is absolutely supposed to be seen as sympathetic. Walter feels a lot of her actions are emasculating and fandom seems to embrace that view without looking at things from Skyler's perspective very much. I've seen horrible complaints about her for daring to stage that intervention back in S1, for instance, as if by doing so - by feeling that her husband, the man she loves, was rejecting every action that would help to prolong his life out of sheer pride - she had been a heinous bitch who needed to keep out of her husband's affairs and was overly controlling. Ugh.
Maybe she could have handled it better and maybe she could have tried to understand Walt's position more at the time, but she's not perfect. No one on this show is. Yet none of the other characters seem to have their flaws held up against them and out of proportion and context so often as Skyler.

Uhh, really? So you mean to say that Iron Man could hardly ever fight against Thor either, because after all the armor is extra-material not intrinsic power, right? And Thor could have hardly stood up against The Hulk in his mortal form from the Thor movie, either, so? Why exactly would you be expecting Maria Hill in a fight against a super to not be equipped with weapons from the arsenal available to her, specially when the movie actually did make a deal out of SHIELD making super-powered-level weapons (which Coulson used on Loki as well, so it's not like it would be completely out of place either, unless the point is that the clerk-type dude can use it, but not Maria Hill for some reason?)Their reply was:
Comics movies follow very much the same tropes of fighting and narrative as their paper-and-ink counterparts. Can't say what part of fandom you're stewing in, anon, if that's a foreign thought to you.
Subject: Re: Watching Avengers for the first time
Um, no. Iron Man can (and did) fight against Thor: it's in the film. Thor can (and did) fight against the Hulk: it's in the film.
Is it so really hard to believe that a non-powered human would last 2 seconds against the Hulk based on that scene (Hulk raging against Natasha, which turns into Hulk vs. Thor) in the film?
I don't care if it's Maria Hill, Coulson or Fury we're talking about here: it's the goddamn Hulk, and any weapon on board that could take him down (except some form of knockout gas) would also destroy the already-misfunctioning contraption they're flying on.
My comments are about the movie (and plot within) as it is: you can come up with all the alternate versions you want, but within the context of the movie, Maria Hlll vs. the Hulk would be laughable.

Civil War is an Event, sort of like massive crossover of series. Part of 616. Affected the Avengers side of things a lot more than the X-Men side.
Young Avengers and Dark Avengers are series. Part of 616.
Different Steves: There's a Captain America in both 616 and Ultimate (he's US President in that, don't ask me why because idk). In 616, Captain America was briefly Bucky Barmes but is now Steve Rogers again.
Different Hawkeyes: In Ultimates, Clint Barton is Hawkeye. In 616, Clint Barton was Hawkeye and then he died and then Kate Bishop was Hawkeye (she's a Young Avenger) then Clint Barton was alive again and Hawkeye again and so now there are two Hawkeyes in 616 and they have adventures in the Hawkeye series.
Does this help any?

SATheir reply was:
Okay, a rough guide to the most high-profile Marvel characters and teams in the 616 universe. (Although I'll probably forget a lot of them.)
The Fantastic Four - Marvel's "first family". They are: Reed Richards, stretchy supergenuis; his wife Sue, the Invisible Woman; her brother Johnny, the Human Torch; and Reed's best buddy Ben Grimm, the Thing. In 616 continuity, Reed and Sue have been married a long time and have two kids, Franklin and Valeria. The F4 are mostly adventurers and explorers, and visit other worlds and different realities. Reed is considered the smartest man in the world so he's often asked to consult on problems.
The X-Men - The X-Men are all mutants: people who developed powers naturally as they aged due to a mutation in their genes, rather than getting them in an accident or whatever. As a rule, civilians in the Marvel U are prejudiced against mutants, and hate them more than other super-powered folks. As a rule, characters from the "X-books" (X-Men and its many spinoffs, most of which are called X-something) tend to interact with each other and not so much with people from other corners of the Marvel universe. Major exception: Wolverine, who's one of Marvel's most popular characters and thus tends to get shoe-horned into everything.
The Avengers - You probably know these guys from the movies. This is basically a catch-all team for heroes with superpowers who don't fit into one of the other teams, so it has a huge roster of members. In addition to the main "Avengers" comic, there are often spin-offs like "New Avengers" or "Mighty Avengers" which focus on a different group of members. "Young Avengers" and "Avengers Academy" are about teams of teenage characters. "Dark Avengers" was a team of bad guys pretending to be good guys formed by Norman Osborn during Dark Reign.
Cosmic Marvel - This covers a bunch of characters like Nova, the Silver Surfer and the Guardians of the Galaxy who live out in space. They don't interact much with the Earth-based heroes.
The "Street-Level" Characters - A bunch of characters who live in New York City, have low-level powers, and tend to deal with minor crime rather than saving the world. Includes Spider-Man, Daredevil, Iron Fist, the Heroes For Hire team and some others.
Thunderbolts - A team made up of reformed bad guys.
Misc Other Heroes and Anti-Heroes:
Black Panther - king of an African nation called Wakanda; buddy of the Fantastic Four and sometimes an Avenger
Deadpool - fast-talking mutant assassin, tends to break the fourth wall and make wacky meta-comments
Dr Strange - Marvel's main magic-using character, the Sorceror Supreme
Namor - king of the sea, mostly a hero but sometimes allies with bad guys
The Punisher - vigilante with no powers who tries to kill all villains
Winter Soldier - Captain America's old sidekick Bucky who was brainwashed into being an assassin

Of the various multiple universes, there's only one really complicated universe - aka the "main" comics universe aka Earth-616. Which is where you might require notes. The easiest way to tackle it, I've found, is to start with a single character, ask for recs for their appearances, keep the Marvel wiki at hand (tbh, I started out by consuming large portions of the wiki before ever touching any of the comics myself, and given this was before the present heydey of fans and ready recs, didn't have too much trouble picking it up on my own)Their reply was:
Starting out with shorter and more straight forward universes, there is the 2 season animated TV series, Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. It's modernized, but closer in inspiration to the above-mentioned twisty main-comics verse storylines and characters, so it's definitely good for a starting out. It's got its weaknesses, but mostly a good show. (Unfortunately it was cancelled to make way for an upcoming new Avengers animated show which will be closer to the movie verse. >:/)
Then there's the comics universe called Ultimates Universe aka Earth-1610. This is the grim gritty and "realistic" verse, origin point of SLJ as Nick Fury (movie!Clint is also very Ults inspired) Full warning, I like it, but it has some really gross moments (Hulk is a would-be-rapist and a cannibal, there's domestic violence, the heroes aren't always very heroic etc etc) and is currently going to the dogs. To read this, there's a very straight forward line of short-series. It can be divided into 4 basic "groups" - Spider-Man related, X-Men, The Ultimates (ie. The Avengers in this verse) and the Fantastic Four. You can read any one without having much to do with any other. This is a good color-coded and timeline arranged list.
http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?400116-Ultimate-Marvel-Reading-Order
There's a fairly short verse called Marvel Noir, which is a bunch of retellings in an non-powered early 20th c. noir-esque verse. Titles here:
http://marvel.wikia.com/Category:Earth-90214/Appearances?display=page&sort=mostvisited
Marvel Adventures is a fun shiny all-ages imprint universe, can also be a good starting point. Stories are mostly short and stand-alone.

Your reading comprehension is laughable, and your anger in this discussion is pathetic.
Your initial comment was Exactly what did Thor do that couldn't have been replaced by 'Maria Hill'? If you want to change the entire scene by magically adding a SHIELD weapon that Fury already implied wasn't in existence in the film (if it was, Natasha would have had it ready just in case when she went to bring in Bruce; also, they wouldn't have had a similar scene with Coulson using a SHIELD weapon against Loki - to little effect, I might add), you go ahead and do so.

So you can go here: http://www.elfquest.com/gallery/OnlineComics/ and that should give you a bunch of folders, one for each series. (So like OQ is the Original Quest, SABM is Siege at Blue Mountain, etc.) Inside those are folders for the individual issues, and within that, the actual scans of the pages.
So what I did to make myself a little (...or a lot...) less frustrated was just grab all the images a chapter at a time and view them locally using a basic image viewer. Way better, IMHO, than the terrible javascript navigation whatsit.

What are you watching/reading to distract yourselves from your misery? (Feel-better recs and talking about what you're eating is also acceptable.) For a more general question, what's your go-to canon for when you're feeling cruddy and need to recuperate?Their reply was:
Subject: Re: Sick!nonnies, sound off!
I've had some type of radioactive mega sniffles since the beginning of the year. Mostly I'm fine, but my nose is running near constantly and I can break into a high fever from one moment to the next, which is kind of a pain since I can't take time off. The first week back to work after Christmas break I also had a downright destructive cough - I even got sent home by my boss one day which TOTALLY wasn't embarrassing at all.
I've been self-medicating with chicken soup at home and fennel tea and ribleaf syrup at work, but it's still a pain... and it's not improving much, mostly because I have to use public transportation - best way to make sure I collect as many bugs as possible :(

Mind if I use this data to make a chart? (How does one link it to the meme, anyway)?
Here is one with Nonnie or Nonny breakdown by age.
(Btw, any chart requests?)
Does this work?"

Yes, it works beautifully and I feel incredibly pained to have to delete your comment because even for lovely charts we have the no embeds rule. So (now that I've reposted your comment text), any chance you'd be willing to post a non-embed link to the chart instead? Pretty please MANY thank yous!

The links I gave previously seem to be having problems, so here's the reuploaded charts: (I've just copied the comment from the new meme)
Okay, I've uploaded the charts to imgur, so hopefully there won't be problems:

By the way, someone wanted to know how much Comics (manga/manhua) and Comics (western) overlapped:
Manga/Manhua and Western: 80
Manga/Manhua alone: 109
Western comics alone: 100
For comparison, here's some anime data:
Anime Alone 65
Anime + Manga/Manhua 171
Manga/Manhua Alone 18
Anime Alone 156
Anime + Comics (Western) 90
Comics (Western) Alone 91
Another interesting fact: Only 2 nonnies are into book (English) fandoms alone, out of 444 who selected Books (English Language).

Did you ever set out to write a nice little id fic which hits all your buttons and somehow find yourself knee deep in intrigue and plot? Or did your epic political saga somehow turn into PWP? Post here for all the times your writing got away from you.
Subject: Re: How did this plot get into my id fic ? (and other writing complaints)
A series of silly jokes I had with a fandom friend about X-Men characters all being in different bands has me writing an "oral history" of these characters in bands during the 1970s and doing way more research than I thought I would on what venues etc. were big at the time. It's very centered around my hometown, I haven't gotten to the slash, and nobody except for her has read it. But I want to make up complex fake discographies!

X-Men: First Class AUs. The more specific and rom-com-y they are, the better. I love dumb, fluffy stories where Erik and Charles are bakers or baristas or a CEO and a prostitute or really anything ridiculous at all, and everyone rallies around them and gets them together...
I want to write my own, but the two ideas I have turned into full-blown stories, and one has a lot of worldbuilding and the other is pretty angsty. I don't think I have the knack to write the fluff I love to read!

I don't know why, but I'm weirdly surprised that the second biggest age range is late 20s/early 30s. I guess I've gotten so used to the young skew of tumblr that I'd forgotten how old early LJ adopters probably were.Their reply was:
Subject: Re: FFA Survey II, Results
I joined LJ about ten years ago, and was 23 or 24 at the time, so. Not the earliest adopter but definitely in the middle of a whole bunch of people joining around the same time, with probably a ten-year age spread to either side of me, at the time.
So, yeah. Not very surprised, myself.

I'm pissed off because I no longer have the "Let people answer this" option unless I end my posts with a question mark. And because I can't find any way to answer anyone else's posts without reblogging. The reply function (which maybe was a Missing e thing?) is just gone for me.
Since I do actually like to converse at least minimally, this is incredibly annoying and discourages me from using the site. Yes, yes, I can reblog things to reply, but I don't want to have to make a damn reblog post for every one-sentence remark I would like to make to another user. I don't want to have to reblog every single thing in order to comment on it.
Subject: Re: What have they DONE to tumblr!?
No, both those things were the same before -- I agree they suck, but it seems like most people who are having trouble were using missing E, and I think Tumblr was trying specifically to disable that. Which also sucks, but if you don't use missing E, it's not really that different. (I actually like the popup reblog, although it seems slower.)

Jacqueline Carey's Santa Olivia. The main character is a biracial lesbian teenager. The first book is dystopian but relatively light, and the sequal is a very fluffy lesbian romance with some action-y stuff.
