I don't think we've done one of these in a while. Name a canon that hasn't been filmed or staged, and suggest your dream cast. Or a remake you'd love to see happen. Got a canon that belongs on screen/stage and you can't think of a cast? Post it and see what folks come up with in the comments!Their reply was:
I'll start. I really want to see Kevin Kline play the title role in Man Of La Mancha. Terrence Mann as Carrasco, Alan Rickman as the Innkeeper, Idina Menzel as Aldonza. (Disclaimer: I'm not actually an Idina fan. I just think she'd be really great.) Maybe Josh Groban as the Priest, for star power.

I realized that this OT3 fic I'm writing is going to need a threesome sex scene. Which maybe seems obvious, but I had kind of planned to get away with a few one-on-one sex scenes between the various characters - now though I think it would really make more sense to have the three characters come all together toward the end, both emotionally and sexually. But I'm far from being an expert porn writer and I have never written a sex scene involving multiple people before.Their reply was:
Subject: Re: What scene are you struggling with?
What's the configuration (m/m/f, m/f/f, m/m/m, f/f/f)? What are the dynamics among the three -- would it be appropriate for two characters to focus on the third in bed for their first time together, would it be 100% equal attention all around, would any of the characters particularly enjoy watching the other two make love, do you imagine anyone particularly liking to give or receive attention? There are a bazillion potential progressions for a threesome sex scene. I could try to give some ideas if you'd like.

I completely disagree. Your argument sounds similar to "Well, they're married, so the husband is entitled to sex anytime and it's not rape if she's reluctant." Being in a relationship doesn't give either partner a constant green light, IMO. The second someone expresses discomfort with being pawed at, no matter what the reason or relationship is, consent should get called into question. OP's scenario is very clearly dubcon.Their reply was:
Subject: Re: Does this kink have a name?
NA
"discomfort with being pawed at"? Really? That really doesn't sound like the scenario the OP was talking about, or reasonable description of a happy, healthy relationship.
You don't have to believe that there's no such thing as rape in marriage to recognise that there's a fundamental difference in expectation between people in a long term relationship and people who've just met.

From a purely logistical standpoint, try drawing stick figure diagrams. Figuring out exactly where you want everyone to go really helps block out a scene and makes it much easier to keep track of wayward limbs.
I've only written one threesome scene, but making a couple quick doodles really helped smooth out the choreography.

Anything that requires a character, especially a female character, to make a major change and overhaul her entire life so she can please the wishes of her love interest. For example, Sandy's complete change in appearance/character at the end of Grease, or Rachel deciding to give up Paris to go back to Ross at the end of Friends.

But saying "don't read the fic" is almost like saying, "too bad, too sad, you can't participate in the fandom until the third movie comes out," especially if their enjoyment of fandom doesn't only include graphics, and that's kind of ridiculous. No one's asking for fandom to cater to one specific person's spoiler-warning needs. But I don't think it's asking too much to expect people to make note in a visible way when a fic they're writing takes place after the events of the film.
Subject: Re: Spoilers?
ayrt
It totally is, but my point remains that if fic is important to you and your fandom participation then you have to tread warily if you absolutely don't want to read the book (or even a synopsis of the book) and want to remain unspoiled. If fic and fandom participation are so important to you, you have to run the risk of spoilers. So yeah, it's crappy to say, but if you're going into fannish spaces where a large number (idk if it's the majority) of fans know the ending to a canon, even if it's a different medium, you have to be careful.
I completely agree with you that it shouldn't be too much to ask for people to clearly label their fic, but to expect it? This is the internet.
I know the turn-around was much shorter between the HP books and movies, and I was never in the fandom, but do you have any clue how people handled it? Or was everyone reading the books before seeing the movies? Or same with the Hunger Games?

If you want to get philosophical about it...we kinda do have that ability, it's just so ordinary we take it for granted. Empathy, facial expressions, language - they enable us to know exactly what another person is thinking and feeling. Subject: Re: a/b/o, w-h-y?
IDK if I'd go so far as to say "they enable us to know exactly what another person is thinking and feeling", since we all "read" other people through our own imperfect lens. Plus, many people are good at concealing some part of themselves from others, while others are not-so-good at expressing themselves in a way that others read accurately.
But, with those caveats, I think this is a lovely thought, Nonnie. Empathy is rad! ♥

On compartmentalizing.Their reply was:
One thing that I wish got brought up more (looking at you, tumblr) is that people have different levels of compartmentalization, and some things that will ping one person won't ping another.
For example, I adore Tolkien in spite of his very, very Eurocentric world-view and lack of female characters. I find his writing beautiful enough, and his themes meaningful enough, that I love to read him anyway. On the other hand, Christopher Nolan, who is similarly bad at women (maybe worse, in his own way), drives me mad, because I generally dislike his themes and style (Momento and the Prestige excepted).
And I wish that liking problematic things which someone else doesn't like didn't automatically get you pounced on. I mean, you can dislike Lord of the Rings because there are no black people, or you can dislike it because you think the writing's boring, or both, but denying that it has any worth to anyone is ridiculous and infuriating.
I see a lot of vitriol about this on tumblr, where they're not just saying "please acknowledge that this work has problems and some people may not enjoy it because of those problems", but saying that if a work has any flaws it's not worth reading and you can't take anything of value from it. And that's silly. Art is just about the most personal experience we have. Denying someone else meaning because a work isn't perfect is going to get you nowhere, because there is no such thing as a perfect work of art, or a perfect creator, and even creators who do horrible things are capable of expressing something important about what it means to be human.
(Ugh this is not very coherent. Sorry.)

I'm sure this comment will demonstrate the depths of my SJ naivety and probably start some wank, but I have to ask... what exactly else would you expect a European writer writing about European mythology to be, apart from Eurocentric? I mean, sure, Tolkien is Eurocentric, but given it was his deliberate intention to write his works based on Norse and Anglo-saxon mythology, I kind of fail to see how that's an insult in this case. I mean, if European mythology is not of interest to you, no, Tolkien is probably not a guy you want to read, but that's a matter of personal taste, not a problem with Tolkien.
TBH, I part genuinely don't understand and part find it slightly irksome the suggestion that it is somehow wrong for European writers to write about their own heritage (especially given their chances of being accused of appropriation by the same people if they write about someone else's).

Have you read Diana Wynne Jones? If not, definitely go for some of her stuff. Her books range from children's lit to adult, but her books for younger readers are often just as interesting and dark in places as her adult work.
Most of the recs I can think of are YA, actually. I just read Skin Hunger by Kathleen Duey and really enjoyed it--it focuses on two characters, Hahp, who is being trained to be a magician in a rather sadistic way, and Sadima, who lives a while before that and is involved in the discovery of magic, sort of. It's good, though creepy.
I also recently read Bitterblue, the third book in the Graceling trilogy. The whole series is quite good, and i really appreciated the way Kristin Cashore didn't back away from the unpleasant realities she'd set up in the earlier books.

Well, if I know someone personally through fandom, I might not be able to enjoy their work/not want to participate in their events just because they're a jerk. Very, very rarely, it's intentionally excluding someone I think has done something unforgivable. Much more often, it's just that I don't really want to deal with them, or I think of them when I read their work.
The bar's a lot higher for content producers I don't know. For me, it's not a moral issue, so much as I just feel icky sometimes watching someone's movie and knowing what they've done.

Good: He once took apart Wail Soulfully in a hilarious series of posts in which, egged on by Nick's skillful trolling, WS said all sorts of ridiculous and self-contradictory things. (The other thing I recall about that thread was Cija calling WS an "extruded plastic dingus," which instantly became one of my favorite insults of all time.
Bad: He's a huge fan of Winterfox/Requires Hate, and has promoted enough that he is probably partly responsible for her current level of success. He's one of the crowd who defends her death threats as rhetoric, claiming that it's not a real threat unless it is phrased as "I will [murder/mutilate/beat up] you." He says that saying "It would be great if someone [murdered/mutilated/beat up] you" is not a threat and so is fine.
Bad: He's also a huge fan and promoter of Cat Valente (aka Yuki Onna) and was extremely active in promoting her work early on. Obviously this is not as bad as promoting WF, given that Cat is merely pretentious and annoying and has never, to my knowledge, threatened anyone with violence. But I still put it in the negative column.
Also, he's a Marxist and likes to rag on American leftists for being insufficiently left. Unlike WS, Nick actually does come from a working class background.

+a billion to everything you said. Tolkien wasn't trying to write an inclusive fantasy or invent a genre; he was writing an English saga to match up to the Norse ones. This is also why his writing is the way it is and why there are songs everywhere and not many women except a very notable shieldmaiden with a "no man" trope straight out of mythology. I want to write movies (or TV shows) that fall into the vein of things I like: more comedic things that are lighthearted but not completely devoid of substance, and sometimes within my major I feel like you either have to like the super-serious stuff and only the super-serious stuff or you're a hack.Their reply was:

I had a film student friend in college who answered that question with "Top Gun" and got a similar reaction. Her take on it, and I agree, is that favorite does not mean best and the rest of the class were a group of pretentious assholes.
Amusingly, unlike the pretentious assholes, she is actually doing something related to her major.

+a billion to everything you said. Tolkien wasn't trying to write an inclusive fantasy or invent a genre; he was writing an English saga to match up to the Norse ones. + 2 billion. Accusing Tolkien of Eurocentrism seems to be an extension of a trend of accusing American fantasy writers of Eurocentrism for setting all their works in pseudo-medieval Europe - a claim which is not without substance, but Tolkien is not American, he's a European writing a European myth. People are allowed to write their own stories, fer crying out loud.

I'm maybe looking for some REALLY GOOD character-driven SF/F, and series of non-excessive lengths would be good. I have loved the Vorkosigan series, and really liked Abhorsen, stuff like that. I also love historical things like Aubrey-Maturn, Hornblower, etc. (O'Brien's writing = to die for.) And humor! Like in Fafhrd and Grey Mouser. Fun, character-driven stuff.
I've tried recently reading some random fantasy and the tropey fantasy doesn't do it for me, unless the writing is stellar. (I started the Green Rider but it was so mediocre to me.) I don't go so much for SF if the SF is too hard and more about the science than the interpersonal relationships. (i.e., no Catherine Asaro)
Thank you!
Subject: Re: Book Recs
I just finished the first book (The Lies of Locke Lamora) of the Gentlemen Bastards Sequence by Scott Lynch and am kind of obsessed with the world and the characters, although I'm not sure if it qualifies for "non-excessive length" given that only two of the projected seven books are currently published.

I adore Tolkien in spite of his very, very Eurocentric world-view

I think many people don't realise that Tolkien wrote about themes like war and the fellowship of men in battle situations because that was what he knew. He served in the battle of the Somme when he was 24! Almost ALL his friends died in the war!

One month from release date in the first country it was released. If you are in fandom, or if you want to be in a particular movie's fandom you find a way of getting the movie. I'm not thinking of anyone in particular, I'm just curious about how people think of good writing, since it's so hard to define.
Subject: Re: Good Writing
Besides the basic good spelling/grammar/punctuation - consistency in characterization both with the canon (as much as possible given premises) and throughout the fic (changing is fine, as long as the process is shown), lack of plot holes, a plot or premise that's interesting (character studies are fine too), well-done dialogue that sounds like the characters...

Sub-thread OP here. I finally finished Snuff and pretty much agree with most of the anons above - the pace did pick up but it never stopped feeling slightly 'off' to me, and the goblin storyline did feel like a re-tread.
I thought it was a marked step down in quality from I Shall Wear Midnight and Unseen Academicals - with most series this long I'd usually just attribute this to burn-out, but given it's Pratchett it's really sad to think this is a sign of his overall declining health. :(

A popular blogger who is also an editor at Haikasoru, which does English translations of Japanese science fiction novels.
He's openly a troll; sometimes a force for good, sometimes not.

Subject: Re: Book Recs
Someone above mentioned the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb; it's not in the same realm as Lord of the Rings, but it does have world-building, intrigue, and character development. And the core relationship... It's difficult to classify because of one character's fluid gender identity, and it's 'canon' for only a given definition: it's not primarily sexual, iirc (though I think there's one ambiguous bit in the final book? Can anyone else remember?) but it goes 'beyond friendship', especially in the second trilogy. So I don't know whether you'd class it as a 'canon gay couple', but it's certainly not peripheral.

You'd think we'd be over this kind of thing by now.Their reply was:
I remember getting a similar impression from my violin teacher, who was so appalled I never went to any classical music concerts (I have never been to a concert, period), and that I preferred listening to pop over classical. He tried to argue that classical is more emotionally evocative, to which I kind of wanted to leave a secret package of various movie/game soundtracks on his doorstep.
Subject: Re: I don't feel ~sophisticated~ enough as a film student
classical is more emotionally evocative
That's so much bullshit. It's more emotionally evocative to some people-- the people who enjoy listening to classical music. But I don't listen to classical music (aside from a few specific orchestral numbers ala requiem for a dream) because it doesn't key into my emotions enough to be worth my time. It just sits there. I can appreciate the technical merits, but I don't listen to music for it's technical merits. Now give me some alternative rock, and my heart will start soaring.

Subject: Re: Separating creation from creator - where does your line go?
I think for me it depends on the context of people pointing it out. In general, I prefer to know as little as possible about actors or writers because I'd rather just engage with the media itself, but if it comes up in a conversation about said actor or writer or whatever, well ok.
What drives me nuts is when people jump into a conversation about, say, a particular performance and go 'but don't you know [actor] is a [horrible thing]!' Like, ok, but we weren't talking about that. We were talking about how well portrayed that character was! I know that some people can't or don't want to compartmentalise, and that's both fine and completely understandable. There's just a world of difference between saying 'I couldn't enjoy Michael Fassbender's performance in Prometheus because I can't help but think of the abuse allegations when I see him' and saying 'Oh, you thought David was a really compelling character? Shame Fassbender is a horrible abuser!'
I've got a couple of friends who do the second thing all the time in group conversations and it's so disruptive and rude. That's not engaging in a conversation, that's berating other people for having a different relationship with media - and implying that enjoying a work or performance is tantamount to endorsing the author/actor's shitty behaviour, which is pretty insulting.

It occurred to me while reading the last "what are you watching" thread that although I watch a lot of television, I'm usually only following a couple of dramas or sitcoms at any one time - most of the tv I watch is non-scripted entertainment, ob docs or entertainment factuals. Subject: Re: What scene are you struggling with?
A scene that establishes a secondary character's relationship with the protagonist, several other secondary characters, the antagonists and her girlfriend all in one conversation. I've never really written this character before and her relationship with the protagonist in this AU is very different from what it is in canon!
I've dashed out a very generic placeholder ("You hurt my friends and I will shoot you!") but it's niggling at me hard.

One of the things that stuck out at me when I saw the Wizard of Oz is one of Dorothy's line's from the "If I Only Had a Brain" song. She says "With the thoughts you'd be thinkin' You could be another Lincoln," and I've always sort of wondered - was he *the* US brainy guy at the time or was he just a good fit, rhyme-wise?

I hate it when I'm reading a fic that has 50,000 words of slow, drawn out, thoughtful characterisation and well-crafted UST while the POV character gradually comes to terms with the fact they have feelings for someone they never thought they could... and then in the final thousand words they blurt, "I love you," the other character instantly says, "Oh, yay, I've secretly fallen in love with you too!" they immediately strip their clothes off to act out generic smut scene 101, and then They Lived Happily Ever After, The End.Their reply was:

Agreed with the hastily pairing off one person with a random character. When writers do that I get the sense they're trying to create a feel-good ending where everyone gets happily paired off, but it's not satisfying to me at all.Their reply was:
Another love triangle resolution that annoys me is when one party gets villainised and then the other two just get together by default.
Subject: Re: Plot resolutions that annoy you
How did I forget that one? That's the absolute worst.
I mean, maybe if there were hints the character was villainous from the start, but it's usually sudden villainy just to get the character out of the way of true love.

I was talking about this last night on another meme, and I came to the conclusion that for me (and I'm really not sure if this is usual or what- I suspect not) the fun of a/b/o is the subversion of it. Take a world where biological imperative is key to human interaction, and then look at how horrific it would be- and how humans who didn't fit into that paradigm would cope. So I write fucked up stuff with unwilling bonds, body horror, the sick sinking feeling when you realise that this is something you can't control but that doesn't have to define you.Their reply was:
Happy fluffy A/B/O holds no interest for me. I don't want to read Omegas and Alphas who live peacefully together. I want people rebelling and fighting against it, invention of ways to control it, proper worldbuilding that explores all the implications of what happens, and relationships within the story that complicate or contradict the initial premise (two Alphas, or an Omega and a Beta, or an Omega who actually only gets off on being in control so even if they bottom they're instructing every course of action etc.)
When it's done well I think it can be absolutely terrific, and it broadened my own horizons as a writer- made me significantly more comfortable with worldbuilding, and with sci-fi as being something that I could write as well as read.
Subject: Re: a/b/o, w-h-y?
I enjoy some of the ones that use it essentially as sex pollen, but I do think the ones that explore the issues are the most interesting. Whether it's talking about the background of how it interacted with the development of modern beliefs for omega/alpha liberation or the struggle with dealing with such biologically driven gender roles. There's a reason why I think Drouk may be the best a/b/o fic I've ever read.
What really creeps me out, though, are the ones that have omegas as slaves and don't seem to have a problem with it. There was one very popular series where the author thought her leads were big damn heroes. These would be the leads that were capturing and imprisoning omegas. But they were letting the omegas pick which of the people applying to rape them got to do it, so that made it okay! And the big heroic plot was them destroying the network that was supplying the omega slaves with heat suppressants. And this wasn't just a matter of the author recognizing it was wrong but finding it sexy, the comments made it clear that they thought it was obviously true.

And to clarify, I was thinking about Donna in Doctor Who; a whole series about something mysterious to do with her, the "most important woman" (which was also bullshit in the end anyway), the converging of the plot threads towards the last, big confrontation... and then nothing. Sorry, the person you've become through your travels, all you've done and seen will be gone from your mind. Subject: Re: What scene are you struggling with?
For one, an action scene. Action is bad enough, but I need to get some important character moments in there or there's no point to writing this particular story at all, and I can't figure out how to set things up to get those character moments to happen. Worst of all, being stuck on this scene is keeping me from working on other stories related to this one. I've started hiding from it all and daydreaming about another fandom entirely.

I was backreading some of our fic crit lately, so I was curious, what do you think constitutes good fannish writing? Is it the same as good profic writing? What matters: phrasing, plots, characterization?Their reply was:
I'm not thinking of anyone in particular, I'm just curious about how people think of good writing, since it's so hard to define.
Subject: Re: Good Writing
For me, it starts with a gripping premise and language that's simultaneously invisible and evocative. Once I get sucked in by this, I look for characterization that makes sense (for fanfic, it means characterization that is believable for those characters; for profic, it means interesting and believable characters) and for the plot to be paced well, with waypoints that make sense and a satisfying resolution.

Slick by Tryfanstone http://archiveofourown.org/works/489524 This is played straight in the sense that Omegas are literally bottom of the heap, but the author takes it to a terrible logical conclusion that really plays with how horrific what is happening is. Take note of the warnings- I could barely read it but it was gripping.
Alpha, Beta, Bitch saltandbyrne http://archiveofourown.org/works/481873 PWP with two Omegas topping an Alpha for the first time. Interesting interplay with the expectations and the embarrassment Alpha Jared has at bottoming for the first time.
Intolerable Cruelty by StripySock http://archiveofourown.org/works/504722 Stand alone story where two people end up bonded who hate each other. Has a sequel where they try and work it out, but so far no dice. Good world building in the sequel so that might be especially up your street.

Face-Off is my absolute favorite thing on tv right now.Their reply was:
It's a competition show on Syfy for makeup/special effect artists and I love it.
First, because I love getting watch the various contestants creative process from prompt to idea/sketches/design to fabrication to working around the various challenges they come up against to figure out how to bring their concept to life. Almost all of the designs end up being interesting and some are flat-out awesome.
Second, the contestants seem to genuinely like and care about each other. Instead of sniping or sabotaging, they actively help each other with anything from design suggestions to techniques to actually lending a hand if someone is struggling.
Third, the judges are critical when appropriate and give praise where it's do. Neither is over the top or exaggerated or dramatic. Just honest opinion and advice.
Subject: Re: What are you watching - non-scripted
Yes, so much love for Face-Off. I kind of want an all-star season, it would be pretty interesting to see the best from the past three seasons compete against each other. But from what I understand, quite a lot of the contestants go on to steady work, so that's pretty cool for them but not great for recurring TV competition. Which is as it should be :)
Last season's crowd was so, so nice, here's hoping this isn't the snipey-reality show season. S2 was a bit like that, I think, but not too bad? I may be misremembering.

So that and the Klaus Kinski thread from before made me wonder, where do you anons draw your lines when it comes to enjoying something while the creator is being a horrible human being? Do you have different standards for fandom and real life?
Subject: Re: Separating creation from creator - where does your line go?
I'm fairly sure that there is nothing so horrible that anyone could do that would convince me that a book, a movie, a show, etc. that I already enjoyed was no longer available for my enjoyment. I'll concede that there are cases where the creator being a terrible human being would make me feel differently, like if Lolita were something more akin to a memoir than a novel. I'd be far less impressed by Nabokov's ability to render Humbert so simultaneously repulsive and charming, and considerably more disturbed by the actual events within the story.
I can't say that if it ever came out that Nabokov was writing Lolita with one hand down his pants, though, that I would stop enjoying Lolita. I guess some people consider that a reaction on principle, but it's a pretty fucking empty principle to me.
Terrible people can produce great things, and those things don't necessarily have anything to do with who their creators are. For the most part, I am always capable of separating a creator from their work. I don't go out of my way to avoid paying for that work, either, because the money it costs me to see a Polanski movie in theater is not, in my mind, money for Polanski to continue raping little girls. It's an acknowledgement of the work that was put into the film, not only by Polanski, but by the entire cast and crew.

Whether I find their work enjoyable has nothing to do with whether I find the author to be a decent human being. I won't give money to a nazi or child rapist, but I'll read/watch/listen to their work. I just try to keep that in mind when reading/watching/listening, in case seeds of their awfulness are present in their work. I don't want to accidentally buy into their worldview.

* Rosemary's Baby, what can I say?
* Psycho. The original one, of course.
* Trainspotting.
* The Night of the Living Dead. Again, the original. I'm not a fan of remakes.
* Conspiracy by Frank Pierson. I just love Kenneth, okay?
