Somebody replied to an anonymous comment left in a LiveJournal post. The comment they replied to was:

Eh, I've never understood why having a low or non-existent sex drive suddenly became a "sexuality" in the first place, as opposed to part of the standard range of sex drive. There are people with high sex drives on the other end -- are we going to split them off too and declare their oppression?

Their reply was:

Asexuality doesn't mean "having a low or non-existent sex drive." There are plenty of asexuals who masturbate, and, conversely, people who don't have a sex drive but still look at others and feel attracted--but without the drive to follow through. The latter group are not asexuals, they're sexual with low/no sex drive.

Being asexual means not feeling sexual attraction. Just like gay man don't feel attracted by woman, and gay women don't feel attracted by men, asexuals don't feel attracted by men or women. (Sort of the opposite of bi/pansexuals, who can feel attract by both both/all genders).

That's why it's considered an orientation in it's own right.
