Dear Colleagues,

We hope this message finds you well.

As you know, the 6th ISA Council of National Associations Conference will take place from 17–20 December 2025 in Pune, India. One of the key items on the agenda will be a vote of significant importance for our global scholarly community: whether to uphold the suspension of the Israeli Sociological Society (ISS) within the International Sociological Association (ISA).

We are writing to respectfully ask your association to vote in favor of upholding the suspension.

This vote is not a procedural detail; it is an opportunity to reaffirm our discipline's ethical commitments. As you know, the ISS has failed to acknowledge, condemn, or distance itself from the documented genocide in Gaza, and from the violations committed by its state against Palestinian society, as well as against several neighbouring countries. Such silence in the face of profound destruction is incompatible with the responsibilities of a national sociological association within a global scholarly community.

In preparation for this discussion, we have compiled a detailed briefing and FAQ document, which provides background, evidence, and an explanation of why upholding the suspension is crucial for the integrity of our discipline and for safeguarding scholars working under conditions of genocide, war, occupation, settler colonialism, and systematic state violence.

You may access the briefing here:

We also wish to highlight that it remains unclear whether the ISA will permit an online vote for national associations that cannot attend the meeting in India. For this reason, we encourage all national associations - including those not planning to travel to Pune - to be fully prepared for the vote, in the event that an online ballot is announced at short notice.

Your readiness and informed engagement are essential for ensuring that the ISA acts in accordance with its principles of justice, human rights, and academic solidarity.

We thank you for your attention to this important matter and for your continued commitment to the values that guide the ISA. Should you require any clarification or additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

In solidarity,
Global Sociologists for Palestine
